flying dog
It was 06:00 and I just got in from LA. A bit of sleep but I wasn't paying too much attention. We landed on 07 at YSSY, so taxiing back to the international terminal we went past all the planes on the ground at the EAST end of the airport. I noticed a QANTAS plane - d'uh! - but noticed the rego: ZK - xxx Definitly NOT VH - xxx Ok, maybe it wasn't ZK, but it definitly wasn't VH. What gives? How? Why? Just asking. flying dog
So shouldn't it be an "air Neu Zulnd" plane and not QANTAS?
Gnarly Gnu
Well the reality is they outsource, of course, in order to avoid bankruptcy brought on by excessive government regulation and unrealistic union demands. It would certainly be much preferable if they didn't.... but that would require an adjustment of the regulations and the union demands. This doesn't appear likely any time soon so they outsource. eightyknots
regulations and unions don't excuse the poor level of service. I fly across the Tasman Sea regularly and I think that the level of service on the Qantas/Jet Connect planes are similar to other Qantas flights elsewhere. Sadly, the service is simply not as good as Ear NuZeeland. If Qantas wants to lift their game, their marketing people will have to catch a few flights with Air New Zealand to see how it is done. ben87r
Love how no one mentions that you can now fly from cairns to sydney for a quarter of the price of 6-7 years ago (like many many other destinations), but blame them for trying to keep their company alive, we would all like to keep all qantas jobs "onshore" but are we willing to pay for the service, isnt this how the discount airlines entered the market in the first place??? Guest ozzie
Can't help but think it all spells ANSETT
fly_tornado
The problem with keeping jobs "onshore" is that it invariably means the tax payer paying for poor management, bad decisions and management screwing the workforce. If they where serious about keeping qantas competitive they shouldn't have privatised the airports.
Guest Jake.f
If the majority of the public knew that almost all of their NZ flights were in ZK registered planes, crewed by Jetconnect staff payed less than their aussie equivalents, I highly doubt that many people would choose to fly with them... A very sneaky practice this is...

This really gets my goat... you guys need to walk a mile in my shoes...I work in the industry in an "outsourced" Port (thank God not for QF)... Government regulation and unrealistic Union demands??? Are you kidding? This was bought on by bad management and economic greed in the WHOLE airline industry (and many others besides).
winsor68
Its people like me and my family who are paying for your cheap airfares every day when I work... Wanna know what my typical roster is? Tues Off Wed Off Thurs 0500 start 1930 finish Friday 0500 start 1930 finish Saturday 0500 start 1730 finish Sunday 0500 start 1930 finish Monday 0500 start 1930 finish.. I haven't had a weekends off for 6 years... I haven't had a payrise for 6 years... I earn half of what my predecessors earned before the collapse of Ansett... (ironically its these same people who are running these business' these days)... and I am casual. To blame it on Unions!!!!! I would give my right Testicle to have a Union to represent me... but in the outsourced industry talk of joining a Union is a sure fire way to have your hours cut... Walk a day in my shoes... ha!
