Guest Intrepid Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Howdy all, Am a GA pilot, due to financial and personal reasons very keen to get into Recreational Aviation and been looking into purchasing a single/two seat aircraft ideally the Chinook WT. Browsing latest trading post listings and noticed a Chinook 2X seater, dual controls, no engine or instruments included, 360hrs. $900, and wan't to know, if I'm in no rush i.e. got good two or three years before I'm really worried about getting the thing flying is this a good deal? Anyone know who's good to call for some info?? I.e. engine and instrument cost's, running cost's, insurance, maintenance etc... I'd really appreciate any useful replies.
Guest Glenn Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 First, welcome to the site. Second, I'm of no help with this and had no idea what a chinook ultralight looked like until I went searching for it. $900 seems ok, but I don't know anything about it or what they are worth new. What are they worth new to buy? When you know that then you will have to work out the cost of the instruments, engine etc... to determine if it's a good deal. Sorry I can't be of much assistance but I'm sure someone here may be of a bigger help.
Guest Intrepid Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Thanks Glen, Have spoken to a few guys already who've said much the same. Basically the aircraft is a two seat front and rear like a drifter etc. Engine can be about 2-3 thousand and instruments also about 1 thousand or thereabouts from what I'm told, seems like a great price but the bloke who owns it has a very heavy German accent and I couldn't really understand him when I called, and he seemed to not know too much about it...I mean $900 is really just loose change and would be an ideal starting aircraft but just not sure how to go about buying it unseen...
TAA Student Pilot Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I mean $900 is really just loose change and would be an ideal starting aircraft but just not sure how to go about buying it unseen... The answer to that is don't, get somebody to go and look at it. You might be buying a money pit, you could be looking at upwards of $10,000 for covering/engine/prop/instruments. 360 hours of unmaintained time is enough to stuff an Airframe, why did he decide to scrap the Aircraft? I would not spend even $900 on something unseen. If you keen you'd have to go and pick it up anyway so take your money and somebody who knows what to look for, if all's well then grab it. The thing is not to look at it stary eyed, for the money it could cost to rebuild you could buy something flying in good nick. There are some good deals around at the moment, Thrusters with 582's in good condition for $15,000, you could easily spend that rebuilding and 800 hours of your time doing it. On the other hand IF (that's a big IF) the Airframe is in good condition and you have a very limited budget, you could get the thing flying with lots of your time and a second hand 503, some access to knowledgable help for maybe $5,000.
