Guest Rossy Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Hi All, Great web site!! I have question straight out, though may seem to be a little naive. Just saw the massive Antonov AN124 fly out of Canberra Airport this morning after unloading the Helicranes from O/S. Wow what a site and dust everywhere. I just caught the end of the take off by accident. My question is: Is there any decent website where you can find out arrivals and departures of these big birds. I have airband scanner. I searched every where to try to find out when the Antonov was departing (even their own webite) with no luck. But I noticed quite a few people at the airport. I know Sydney has the arrivals and departures on their website. Maybe this is that web site for that info? I guess Canberra is a little different. Cheers Rossy
Guest Chainsaw Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Rossy! I'm sorry I can't answer your question this time, but I'd like to welcome you to the Aussie Aviator message Board. Its a great place to share this fantastic hobby/interest. Btw, there is no such thing as a silly question here :) Todd and SteveR are regulars in Canberra and on here. Hopefully they will be able to assist you. Cheers, Chainy
Todd M Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 No free website (except the odd forum with leaked information) will give you any details about these kinds of flights, as they are more or less kept secret to only the people working at the airport/the airline /company and to some spotters who have inside info or good friends overseas who can give us details on aircraft departures and where they will be arriving (leaked info comes into this, where estimated times come out of). Canberra Airport does have an arrivals/departures on their site from memory, but you will not be able to get any special movement info. Maybe except charter aircraft services, but not on VIP or cargo/RAAF movements. I believe the Antonov was leaving around 11:30am today, I missed it as I did not have a way of getting to the Airport to see her fly off. Steve R can probably post and make more sense that what I have!
Guest Steve R Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Hi Rossy, The two main sources for info are the Sydney Board and Jetspotters.com but often there's a mix of rumour and hard fact there. If you search around you can gain snippets of information such as http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/200 ... 0a_nr.html for the upcoming arrival of the C-17 and other such sites for political and royal visits. Actual arrival and departure times are at best approximate, only Brindabella, QF & DJ etc operate to a timetable, so patience is a virtue and aeroguard a necessity when hanging around waiting for a possible arrival or departure like this morning. There is a small group of Canberra Spotters who operate an email group for ACT based enthusiasts with occasional meetings and snippets of interest. If you'd like more details PM me.
Guest Rossy Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Thanks Thanks guys for all the helpful comments. Yep it all make sense to me. Will try those web sites but figured its a hit or miss option. Pull out the Aeroguard!! Its good living in Jerra if your a bit of a plane spotter as they roll in on rwy35 from the south straight over us. (though 98% are 737's and the Dash's). Have seen an early morning Jumbo roll in when Syd was fogged in, and also an Emerites 777ER some months ago. And the queen and Blair were on 777's also. You Canb guys would know all this anyway!! Guess we can expect a few more big birds in now the runway extension is up and running. Nice little UAE 747SP still sitting at Fairbairn this morning. Thanks again Cheers Rossy
Guest Steve R Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 The Sp is the last one ever built apparently. Another useful site Rossy is at http://www.defence.gov.au/media/index.cfm. If there's ever a release about a flyover at Duntroon or any of the Memorials near the AWM there's always a good chance that the Aircraft will be staging from Fairbairn
