G'day, trip report fro Townsville to Cowra to ferry a C172 home follows....We got back from TL at 1130 today, left Townsville @ 0730 yesterday got fuel in Emerald and then got the crap pounded out of us on the Emerald - Roma leg, mostly as we ran parellel with the Carnarvon Ranges. Ground speed was a miserly 75 kts which made the flying time to TL - Roma almost 6 hours + a 1/2 hour pit stop, so we elected to call it a day in Roma. Got up at daybreak and left Roma at around 0600 Qld time in a severe smoke haze so we stayed at 1500ft above the ground so we could see a bit better, until the sun got high enough (around St George) with the assistance of a 35 knot tail wind we were scooting over the ground at around 130kts and did the Roma - Cowra leg in a tad over 4 hours with a 1/2 hour brekky & pit stop at Walgett. We had a good run from Walgett to Cowra, but a wild ride landing in the 35 kt head wind at Cowra which had a fair cross wind component as well. Any how the 172's safely down on the ground again and might stay there until all this wild weather goes away.
