Pentagon Announces Possible Fighter Sale to Australia

The Pentagon issued a notice Feb. 6 of a possible sale to Australia of 24 F/A-18E/F fighter aircraft in a deal that could be worth $3.1 billion.The Australian request includes installed engines, spares, radar systems, computer networks, guided missile launchers, night vision goggles and electronic warfare counter-measure systems, a Pentagon agency said.

 

â€The total value, if all options are exercised, could be has high as $3.1 dollars,†the Defense Security and Cooperation Agency said.

 

The agency cited Australia’s standing as an important U.S. ally in the western Pacific that plays an important role in ensuring peace and economic stability in the region.

 

â€Australia needs these aircraft for coalition operations,†the statement said. “The proposed sale of F/A-18E/F aircraft will increase Australia’s tactical aviation capabilities.â€
