Guest Glenn Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Source: Media release sent to me via email May 1st will mark the start of an exciting journey that has been three years in the planning for Father John Fowles, who will set out from Albury airport in NSW in his hand built Jabiru J400, on a twelve leg goodwill fly-a-thon around Australia. The fly-a-thon, named the Angel Wings Fly Away To Heaven initiative, aims to increase awareness about the plight of people living in East Timor, and to raise funds for projects that will support orphans in remote villages. East Timor, although one of the closest neighbours to Australia, is the poorest nation in Asia where approximately 50% of the population live below the poverty line, with many adults earning less than 50cents per day. The fly-a-thon will seek sponsorship of the Angel Wings aircraft along with other flying participants, to raise money for projects supporting the Baguia Orphanage in East Timor. Nominated projects for the orphanage include a designated building program, along with the establishment of a nutritional food program, an education program and a health and hygiene program. At the same time Fly Away To Heaven in conjunction with the Pilgrim Partnership Support Program will promote World Youth Day 2008 by sponsoring a group of young people from East Timor to attend this event in Sydney, celebrating the first visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia. In doing so, they hope to provide the East Timorese participants with an opportunity that will inspire them to become leaders within their own country, whilst encouraging other young people across Australia to become involved in this important event.
