Just like the UAL827 flight the other day, VH-OQC (1st commercial flight into Melbourne) is going down the Parkes track.

I noticed the QF108 ( LAX-SYD ) tracking just to the West of Brissie on its way into SYD a few days ago too .. A little unusual , however , I doubt whether it adds many track miles to the overall trip .

yes Dave, must be a change in the jet stream.

I was talking to a good mate of mine , a QF744 senior captain about flight tracks . He said that basically with ATC approval they can track which ever way they like , and that over a long haul flight such as LAX- SYD even a small variation in wind speed and direction could be significant , especially on fuel burn . Incidentally when we flew SYD-AUH a couple of months ago , the outbound flight took us over Derby , Bali , Singapore and Mumbai , while the return flight routed thousands of Kms further South over Male , Geraldton , Whyalla to Sydney , yet it was quicker ..

Interesting...

Lots of other planes crossed the QLD coast this morning, maybe the jet stream theory is right.

VH-OQC didn't waste any time here, off again to LAX from Mel around lunchtime.
