Guest Michael Coates
Source: ATSB Website Well yesterday saw the release of the ATSB investigation into an accident which claimed a good friend and our aircraft inspector about 18 months ago. I think the report has more questions than answers but generally is thorough and complete. What i don't understand is why the investigation was carried out by the RAA when the aircraft was VH registered ? I am not questioning the RAA's ability to do the investigation but wouldn't we be better served by having 'proper' investigators doing the job ?? You dont get the EAA doing the NTSB's job in the USA. NOTE: comments are just that, comments and in no way meant to be defamatory against the ATSB or RAA. But hopefully will encourage debate. http://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2008/AAIR/pdf/AE2008029.pdf
Guest aviatrix27
Could the reason be that the aircraft is in a category normally registered under RAA rules instead of VH- rules? Just a question...
Guest Michael Coates
There are probably more registered VH than RAA but i might be wrong (they have a strong following in the SAAA) maybe someone knows ?
GAJab
The ATSB normally don't investigate experimental aircraft crashes in OZ so they probably gave it to RAaus for experience as they really need it.
Guest Michael Coates
The report doesnt make sense, the pilot was going out to do mild aerial manuevours ?? He used to fly like a granny driving to church on Sunday, where do they get these comments ?? I know his wife was knocked over by this statement as the report was the FIRST time she had heard about this comment also.

I have read lots of ATSB investigations into experimental aircraft crashes...Just go to the database and look up Lancair...
Guest Michael Coates
But what i was saying is this plane was GA registered, why was the investigation done by the RAA ?? They had to call in the ATSB anyway so why wouldnt the investigation be completed by the GA guys ?? Just a question.
