mrchavez Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Can anyone here recommend a Flight Training School at Toowoomba? A few other questions I have about this location: Is the aerodrome swamped with GA/Training/Commercial traffic? How close is the training area? Do the schools in the area have large student backlogs? Are there many restricians due to the proximity of Residential Housing (My ERSA is out of date)? Thanks Ian
Guest djrose Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 G'day, I just started my flight training with the Darling Downs Aero Club at YTWB. Toowoomba is a regional city, that (from what I can tell) isn't 'swamped' with GA/Commercial traffic. It's got it, but it's certainly not ;Archerfield busy'. Actually in saying that, you need to know that it's CTAF®, not controlled airspace. The training area is about 3-5mins flight south of the aerodrome. There is one restriction when flying near the aerodrome, it's (from memory) about 3/4nm NNW of the aerodrome. There are 2 training organisations, the Darling Down Aero Club http://www.ddac.com.au or Aerotec flight training http://www.aerotec.com.au/training.html Both have their own pro & cons, but after much consideration I am doing my training with the Aero Club. I hope this helps. Damien.
GAJab Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I dropped in there yesterday. A bit of big GA traffic coming and going, the runway is right in the middle of suburbia and quite high at over 2000 ft, big mound in runway can't see each end from the other, Oakey and Amberley are both nearby in terms of airspace, only thing I didn't like is it would get bumpy being inland versus coastal.
Guest djrose Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I can attest to those bumps. Was up on Saturday... a beautiful clear day... lots of turbulence. Made for an interesting lesson on flying straight & level!
mrchavez Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 Thanks for the responses. It's always good to get some advice before spending $$.
Scottw Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 It was a nice day on Saturday Saw the Boeing Stearman(VH-ZYZ) get some air under its wings on Saturday. Helped give the "Recall" Stearman a nice clean before she went up. Lovely aircraft. http://www.recreationalpilots.com.au/gallery/details.php?image_id=1169&mode=search Here are a couple of shots of DDAC training Aircraft. You my have been in one of these particular aircraft Damien especially the TraumaHawk http://www.recreationalpilots.com.au/gallery/details.php?image_id=818 http://www.recreationalpilots.com.au/gallery/details.php?image_id=815 And this is a shot i took earlier this year during a ballon bursting comp http://www.recreationalpilots.com.au/gallery/details.php?image_id=817 Regards Scott
Guest djrose Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Gday Scott, I was flying (under instruction) the Traumahawk that landed after the Stearman at around 11:20ish on Saturday morning.
Scottw Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 G'day Damien "When the planets align" down the track and if you feel comfortable with this, I will take some snaps of you doing some take-off/Landings if you want me too. Scott
Guest djrose Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 G'day Scott, mate that would be awesome if you could! I'll keep in touch & let you know when I'll be out there. If you've got the time & are willing... snap snap! Cheers, Damo.
