After a little detour to The Oaks to pick Darren up, unless he's not kidding about the beer. Then I'll just be picking up the beer.

Ross. I did a quick survey of selected forum members and 100% of them said they would also choose the beer. Perhaps an official poll is needed to see if Darren really does have anyone who would choose to take him in preference to the refreshments. Regards Geoff

It's a toughie Captain. Beer vs a friend. Beer is my friend. I take beer I have a cool refreshing beverage and a friend. Maybe it isn't so tough after all.

Just re-read my post and it looks like it was written by an alcoholic. "Beer is my friend", I am off to seek some help...

If I can work out a way of strapping the cans to the wings and Ross flies high enough, ice cold beers for all on arrival. Are yours powered sites, and might forum members be able to recharge a laptop or similar if necessary?

Regards Geoff

Capt - there isn't any powered sites at Natfly other then the RAA tent all though there are power points in the forums rooms.

However, I will have my generator there that can be used by any forum member - it is only 2,400w but I can't guarantee that it will be available exactly the moment that you need it as my laptop has to take first choice  - other then that you are welcome to use it

If all the forum members are at NatFly then why would anyone need their laptop? I am happy to talk to other members rather than PM them or post in the forums. 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

Actually a question for the Sparkies out there:

If I have a generator that is rated at 2000w continuous and 2,300w peak and I run an 1,800w Urn on low - can I also charge a laptop or mobile phone (how many phones)???

This will help for me to know to what extent we can use the generator for everyone - thanks!

Just to obtain NOTAMS and SIGMETS for the return trip .... and then to decode them 036_faint.gif.544c913aae3989c0f13fd9d3b82e4e2c.gif ....... and of course, also to post lots of photos for the poor buggers who can't get there this year. 087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif :rotary:

I would think you're ok with the generator Ian.

If you have 2300W maximum then this will allow you a 500W margin. Just had a quick look at my adapter and it draws 1.5A so that is roughly 360W (ignoring power factor problems) so I can't see you going over the maximum and you're only going over the continuous rating by a little bit.

I get the feeling that it may get a bit crowded at times, as there are so many of us now.

But just think how many phones you'll be able to choose from if you need an upgrade.

I'll have a black coffee and a bun with JasJam please.

006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif - isn't it great - that's why I have had to order a hire tent apart from the shop tent just for the forum members to sit back in

Hi Ian,

Am hoping to fly to Narromine on Thursday and therefore praying for good weather. There might be a trough passing over the ACT/Goulburn area on Thursday when I plan to fly, so might have to delay by 24hrs and get a nice tailwind all the way from Goulburn to Narromine.

If you're 1800 watt urn is set on low, then chances are that it would only use 900 watts or less on that setting.

I take my coffee white with 2 sugars,

I take my tea white with no sugars.

Cheers,

Glen

NatFly 08

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if there is any chance of a lift to NatFly 08 this weekend from around Canberra region. Just me, a larg-ish duffle bag and small DV camera. Four wheels are ok!

Thank's in advance,

Urns and gensets.

It aint that simple.

Lets look at what really happens.

An urn is a very simple device.

If the water is below a certain temperature, the thermostat cuts in, and 1800 watts is delivered into the element, and the generator chugs away at the 90% load. Theoretically, there is enough power left to drive a few lights, laptops, and mobile phones.

When the water is at full temperature, the thermostat cuts out, and the generator sees no load at all. A few lights, laptops, and mobile phones mean nothing at all.

There is no in between. If you turn down the thermostat, all you do is adjust the temperature at which the changeover occurs. It does not change the load on the generator during the on period, or the load during the off period.

BUT - lets look at what happens when the generator has been purring along happily with almost no load, then suddenly, out of the blue, the thermostat cuts in, and introduces a 90% load. That's a staggering change. Firstly the contacts in the thermostat spark and arc high voltage spikes all through your delicate electronic equipment like lightning at the end of your street. The voltage regulator cannot handle the step input, and the motor may alternately almost stop and then over rev with subsequent high and low mains voltages which would strain any power supply designed for a nice even 240 volts. Your computer gear may survive it, and it may not !

Going from 90% load to no load, or vice versa is very risky indeed!

So what to do?

The traditional solution is to only partly load the generator with something that switches on and off, plus a load that that stays on all the time. Like a 600 watt jug for heating water, and a 600 watt light (great for camping out).

Another solution is to operate the urn, and your electronic equipment at different times.

And another solution is to use the 12v battery charger output most generators have to charge a car battery, and run a 240 volt inverter from the battery.

Anyway, surely we will be more interested in cool drinks than hot ones!

Jack. :):)

One last question b4 I head off tomorrow -

Bottled water/softdrink and BBQ food - is it a ripoff or reasonable prices?

regards

soft drinks, bottled water, and the usual BBQ stuff is usually sold by the local fire service and other charities, so prices are a bit more expensive than the usual retail, but its all for good causes. though the bar isnt too bad!

oh, and if you can, get a ticket to dinner on sat night i believe!

Yes, yes. Last year they ran out on the Saturday night. I asked the owner and he said, "I told my wife we was gonna run out" 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif Can end up a bit expensive but as mentioned all for a good cause. I am hoping that I can get out of Sydney with Ross so we can fly there but getting out of Sydney Friday is looking a bit touch and go. If not I will drive and am happy to run anyone into town to grab supplies.

Regular meetings of members

Hi Ian

Just wondering if this forum has a regular/annual event at which all the aviators can catch up? If not would it be a good idea? I'd be happy to help co-ordinate if you need help. It is possible I haven't explored the website enough... If not apologies
