john roe Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Hi Pete, Qantas QFA 63 / 64, very seldom cross Western Australian coast line, the depart Sydney and overfly Melbourne-Tasmania and traverse west of NZ, the track along the Antartic coast, called the Antartic Route, then turn up to SA to JNB, and vise versa return for Fl QFA 64, the flight is approx an hour longer than if they flew as the crow fly's, which would cross just slightly north of Bunbury WA, they save 28% fuel by doing this route, maybe a couple times a year , it will , depending on the trade winds, cross over WA. All flight plans lodged for any AC movement, are based on the best tail winds and lightest head winds, an example today, Etihad, from Abu Dhabi, Fl454 flew over the north west of Coral Bay, near Carnarvon, the other flight crossed south of Margaret River, both AC had a ground speed of 1 knot the difference and both AC chasing good tail winds, arrived on time, regardless of the route taken. Cheers john .
