john roe
Although I do not get much time to spot at the YPPH airport, todays SAA was a ( A346 ) A340-642, with the normal main Boggie landing wheels with also another set under the belly, some thing I have never seen before. cheers john
Uncle Chop Chop
Very interesting isn't it? The Boeing 777-300 is around the same size and weight and yet it only has 2 boggie's with 6 wheels on each. Most Aircraft are different but it interesting to see the configuration.

red750
The additional undercarriage leg spreads the load and reduces runway loading, particularly as the A340 can operate from smaller airports than some other heavy aircraft. The smaller models have a two-wheel centre-line leg while the 600 model has a four wheel bogie. The 747 has two wing mounted and 2 belly mounted legs. Regards, Peter.
