So he went all that way without a basic tool set?

Easily done. Tool weight lots, cost sqillions to boost into orbit.

Last week I flew half way round the globe with my new wheelchair on board. Yesterday I walked miles to find a shop selling basic tools to re-tighten it’s connectors.

One of the greatest benefits to repairs in Outer Space, is that when you drop that teensy-weensy little screw or nut, it can't roll to the most distant corner of the spaceship, and end up under a cabinet, where you could never find it.

Another thought -  if you lose a spring in the ISS just as you go to install it, does it just keep bouncing around the cabin, never stopping in that distant, unfindable position, that all lost springs end up in?

Or a cast iron hang glider.

Or a spinaker on a submarine.

Or a pocket on a singlet.

(re)assembling hydraulic  lifters, I have had on more than one occassion, the spring and the top cap go into orbit. I did find them. Good reason to have a clean shop.

Same with collets on tops of the valves.

And there used to be a large market for cigarette holders to allow you to smoke without the wind and ashes while riding.
with an equally enduring market for smoking something other then cigarettes

And another one:

Useless as an air conditioner in a convertible.

Keeps your feet warm.  Nev

+1 always nice to have the roof down and heater cranking when I had the MX5,

you actually sit in a still air bubble. so the air-conditioning worked well. used to be a lot of fun driving in the rain with the roof down.

as long as you stayed over 60km/h the airflow pushed all the rain over the top and you stayed dry.
