Flying from Philippines to Perth in an Ultralight

Hi everybody,

I am currently learning to fly ultralight. My eventual dream is to fly from Philippines to Perth in an ultralight such as a Flight Design CTLS or similar.

Before I get all excited about this can anybody tell me the hurdles I am up against? Mainly in regards to safety and flying over / stopping in several countries on the way. I am an Aussie citizen.

Any advice / tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

An Aussie citizen? Are you then going Philippines-Perth or the other way around? Well, I say, if you have the nads, do it Issues, well fuel, fuel stops, stopping in countries that may not want you there, mechanical issues. Google 'flying around the world in a microlight'. Should answer some of your queries

Hi there, it should not be too hard to do, cause its not that far.

Firstly you need to work out the aircraft registration category, ultralight will make it difficult because of the sea crossings so go for a primary category registration eg VH instead of ultralight.

Save the money for customs clearance, overflight permits, air traffic control and safety equipment... life jackets and raft etc.... (this will cost more than all the other expences added together) then find a way to document it all on camera to enjoy in years to come and that's it.... Keep me posted !

  • 1 month later...

I have ferried a 210 from the Philippines to Perth via Darwin as the entry point.

Its an experience to say the least. :D I am not sure what sort of range you will get out of the ultralight but the route we used was Zamboanga - Tawi - Balikapapan - Denpasar - Kupang - Darwin - Kununurra - Broome - Port Hedland - Meekatharra - Perth.

Your biggest problem is going to be the weather during certain times of the year, so long as your organised customers/quarantine is not an issue. Carry a couple of thousand USD $$ you WILL need it.

Good Luck, feel free to get in touch if you decide to do the flight and would like some more info.
