Scotty 1 Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Another one. This time a Ford ad with some flying at the end. http://www.archive.org/details/Terrapla1932 Cheers Scotty
Guest DWB Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Good find Scotty - Never have heard about the little jet engines on the end of the rotor blades before. Now wonder what happened to that design................
Scotty 1 Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Don't know Dex but here is another one just for you grass growers. http://www.archive.org/details/Agricult1955 Cheers Scotty
dazza 38 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Nice Scotty.Geez they knew how to make Ugly flying machines back then.
Old Koreelah Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Good find Scotty - Never have heard about the little jet engines on the end of the rotor blades before. Now wonder what happened to that design................ Try this one, Dex: http://www.asra.org.au/rotordyn.htm An awesome design, such an achievement generations ago. Perhaps the earsplitting noise was a slight issue...
dazza 38 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Try this one, Dex:http://www.asra.org.au/rotordyn.htm Interesting, I wonder why the design never took off.
Guest DWB Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Amazing - thanks for that find too Lyle. Hard to believe someone hasn't picked up on that technology since. Was there other drawbacks other than noise I wonder. Interesting reading about the scale back led by government in Britain on Helicopter companies. I know I'm forever a cynic but I wonder what was really going on behind closed doors.
red750 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Here is the Wikipedia article on tipjets, with links to a number of designs. One, the French Sud Ouest Djinn had 178 examples built. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip_jet Another article with some interesting photos http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/helicopters/q0141.shtml .
Old Koreelah Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Amazing - thanks for that find too Lyle. Hard to believe someone hasn't picked up on that technology since. Was there other drawbacks other than noise I wonder. Interesting reading about the scale back led by government in Britain on Helicopter companies. I know I'm forever a cynic but I wonder what was really going on behind closed doors. Why was the Rotodyne dropped, and almost all evidence of it obliterated? There have been (and continue to be) plenty of amazingly stupid decisions by governments. Then there are the conspiracy theories. It's very instructive what we learn long after the event; NATO chose the Lockheed F104 Starfighter over a promising British jet fighter. Much later the Lockheed bribery scandal made the headlines. Regards, Lyle
red750 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Located another tip-jet helicopter not previously listed (not even in Wikipedia) in the Ed Coates Collection. It's called the SNCASO 20SO1110 Ariel: http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac6/SNCASO SO1110 Ariel.html (Edit: There is an article in the Italian language version of Wikipedia) .
siznaudin Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Nice Scotty.Geez they knew how to make Ugly flying machines back then. One of my favourites.
red750 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Another unusual concept - triple rotors (note the Comet in the background at Farnborough): http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac6/Cierva W.11 Air Horse.html .
