Guest Chris Spencer-Scarr Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Canopy unlatching has caused at least 2 fatal Lancair legacy crashes. The first was after take off at Sun 'n Fun in the US in '09. The caused remained a mystery until amateur photos surfaced taken just after rotate showing the canopy 2 inches ajar. Similarly, in South Africa a pilot had an oil fire in a legacy and opened the canopy to let the smoke out. Lost elevator autority. That said, it depends on aircraft design. Both the legacy and the KR have small horizontal stabs. I have had a tip up pop in an RV (my fault!!!) and it had no effect on the controls.
Coop Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 What happens if the canopy pops open? The pilot sh*ts himself!! That's what happens!! How do I know?..... hmmm.... Coop
Grumman Ace Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 All this talk makes me pretty happy about having a sliding canopy :)
Coop Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Don't get too complacent. Derek Piggott lost a sliding canopy from a 2-seat glider. It took half his tailplane off and both had to bail. Coop
Guest Nerb Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 A skyfox with the doors up is very refreshing. I guess that type of door doesnt matter much.
