flying dog Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 Folks, Sorry if this sounds un-friendly but it is beyond a joke. A LONG LONG time ago I joined and had all sorts of trouble JOINING. After all that stuff, I stayed with them for a while. Then I decided to leave. I "unsubscribed" from them and I thought all was good. I wasn't getting e-mails from them. Now, suddenly, I am getting them again, and when I try to send an e-mail to them, it comes back "unknown user". There are NO contact details on the site or means to get off their list. If "you" are thinking of joing them, I would strongly urge you not to as the site is poorly maintained - from experiance - and I have spoken to others who say they have tried many times to get events listed and fail to. Unless you are a MEMBER you can't send e-mails. They do NOT remove you from their mailing list when you explisitly tell them to. I have learned that they are in breach of an ACMA rule - http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_310369 And I would advise you to avoid them like the plague. Head in the clouds Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 I don't know what the problem is, I've always found it to be a very useful site, lists all the fly-ins that anyone wants to post on it, shows maps of the area, links to accommodation, cost of entry to events. As for not being updated, well in the past years it's been the first way I found out about any cancellations - The Great Eastern for example. You can visit the site as a guest and see all the fly-in info, or join as a member and have any changes to 'watched' events emailed to you, just like this site. Not long ago someone was asking on this site whether there was anything happening with flyins in SEQld in the next couple of months, a quick check of Aeroclub would have shown the three or four... Are we talking about the same site? You can have a look without having to register so there's no reason why you'd get any email unless you request it. And, just in case anyone is wondering, no, I have nothing to do with them, don't know the site owner, no vested interest etc, just always found the site great! Have a look, see what you think before condemning it on one person's say so - Aeroclub PS - as for not being able to contact them, look at top right of the page, just click 'Contact' and send them an email... Admin Posted March 14, 2013 Share Posted March 14, 2013 What we need here is someone to put their hand up and volunteer to add events that they can find into the Recreational Flying Event Calendar...they then appear for 14 days prior to the event on the site home page and across the top of the Trips/Events/Spare Seats Forum for everyone to know about...the Event System here also has a RSVP system included in it so site users can see who else from here is attending and you can arrange to meet up by conversing in the site PM system. Every time you add an event you can also have it automatically create a forum thread for the event as well, that way you can discuss the event and then after the event, post outcomes of the event like pictures etc etc etc etc etc. There really is a lot on offer to everyone here at Recreational Flying...anyone want to have the title of the site Events Manager??????????????...then please put your hand up Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A bit like Micky Mouse in Fantasia with the broom sticks and the water buckets. I have been where you are now. I had enough and thought I had myself removed from their database. I was wrong. I also have been receiving emails again just recently. Understand...ALL events are in the calendar so you can see them way ahead if they are added...the 14 days display ones are to let users know of the upcoming event and as a reminder for those that already know about it...on one hand as much notice as possible would be good but on the other, don't want to saturate the top of the Events forum with loads of entries way in advance, entries that you may not be interested in or due to distance can't attend. I think it would be a decision that the Events Manager could decide, if anyone wants to put their hand up, to keep a balance of forward time vs crowded list of events Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The site I am mentioning is hap-hazard and not kept up to date - despite what people may say. You said someone needs to take it on and handle it all, etc. Honestly, what is here is very good, as it is self controlling. People post things with upcoming events and dates. Not trying to change it FD, just trying to improve it with more entries of events...I just don't have the time to keep adding events into it...Cap't use to once a month add all the upcoming month's events into it which was fantastic however he became busy with work so it just needs someone who can spend a moment each month seeking out all aviation events that are coming up, aeroclub.com.au is one source, and simply add them into the events calendar for everyone...naturally the more events site users can also add to it the better for everyone not to mention the extra exposure their event would get not just to registered site users but also visiting guests, google search bots etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(7600) Allowing people to add events to the "list" with dates/locations is THEIR responsibility. It shouldn't fall on you to keep it up to date. Like that, it looks after itself and it lightens your workload not having to administer things. There shouldn't be ONE PERSON responsible. I guess a bit like the 'net. Each person puts in their part. You're responding to the email address they use for sending out the emailed details of upcoming events to you. Usually bulk emails like those use an unattended address and have a notice saying something like "Please do not reply to this email blah blah". If you want to contact someone on a site you need to use the 'Contact' button. In Aeroclub's case it is at the top right and also bottom centre of all pages. Just to check it I sent them an email using the Contact button and it sent quite correctly and also sent a copy to my Inbox and says I will receive a reply shortly. The email address for contacting them via the Contact button is quite different from the one you sent to, which they use for mailing out. Their Contact email address is - [email protected] You could send them an email to that address and ask to be removed from their mailing list. I have had a LOT of problems with this site. The idea of posting was - as stated - to warm people of the danger of going there and giving them your details. Great site for upcoming events that are not that I know of available elsewhere Like others I have not had any reminders until recently which reminded me to include the Loxton flyin on the 13 th April. I Emailed and they included next time I looked. I have NEVER received any emails other than reminders of upcoming events Hope you sort out your problem.
