J400 stalls a little faster than the long wing, longer wing about 30kg heavier, anybody correct me if I’m wrong but a std J230 is around 380kg. Short wing is definitely easier to hangar. :). Performance difference between std j400 and mine is quite marked but I have a c/s prop. Mine climbs much better even at 100 hp takeoff. Cruise about the same. I cruise 115kts @ 17lt/hr 4800rpm

Nice!

My numbers from actual

J200 at 600kg, CAE 3300 will TAS 125 without much problems, much more fuel though, ~26 lph

J200 (and a heavy one) is 360kg

VG fitted to J2/400 wing and under tail make a good difference to low speed handling and stall speed

I think the only problem with a 914 in a J2/4xx is the cost of the engine,

I did see some numbers from an EFI and CS fitted 3300 and I was surprised cruise and fuel wasn't that much better, Id bet climb was though

Just a s a side note for anyone interested, there is an extensively modified (but finished and flying) J200 possibly coming up for sale.

Mods include;

Tailwheel conversion.

Lycoming 0-233 installed.

Original ignition replaced with full electronic.

Auto pilot.

Enlarged tailplane.

I've got a few hours in this thing, and it's a beast!

Can't remember the cruise speed, but in excess of 100kts (like 120Kts?)

Owner is getting ready to fully retire with back problems, which make getting in and out, as well as sitting for long periods of time, a bit painful.

Don't know a whole lot about Lycomings, but I suspect the power output is just related to what rpm you want to operate it at?

Been a few years since I flew this, but I thought take off was around 2700?

Any idea of empty wt? 0-235 are quite heavy around 110kg, I guess a heavy tail wheel may balance it out. Higher empty wt means less usable load. Just interested in weights.

Couldn't really tell you actual weights, but the 233 is a lightweight version of the 235, not sure what they did, but I think they were aiming it at the LSA market.

It's a considerably lightened engine compared to the standard 235. There'd be details easily found for it.. Do a bit of time in one of these Jab tail wheelers before you buy. Nev

I have a 914 j400, and love it. Balance wise it is really good, actually better than a std j400 that a friend built at the same time as me.

@planesmakerA bit of a delayed post but where did you rustle up the engine mount for your Jab, Tom? Off the shelf from South Africa or the US or custom done here?
