Willedoo - Colourisation of WW2 photos has been carried out for the last 25 or 30 years, and has speeded up since computers got bigger and better. Even WW1 images have been colourised with startling results.

There's even WW1 film footage that has been transferred to video and colourised. The footage is stunning.

There are thousands of these colourised WW2 images available today, from factory assembly photos, right through to battlefield and naval photos. Do a Google search using "WW2 photos colorised" and select images.

These Smithsonian photos haven't been colourised; they are original colour photographs that the museum has recently scanned to digital format. The colourisation of B&W photos is great. It can add extra clarity to the originals. It must be good software to colour film footage.

It just has to be 24 pictures per second faster. If you think of those PIXAR movies, ans the Super Hero ones with lots of CGI, these movie companies must have computers with dazzling speeds.

You might also be interested in a series running on SBS called Australia in Colour which has wartime footage in colour, as well as things like the FJ Holden production line, the Petrov Affair, etc., in todays episode.

Thanks Peter, I haven't seen it as yet. I see it's available on DVD so I'll buy a copy.
