willedoo Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 The National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution are digitalising their stock of colour photos from WW2. A lot of aviation history there. The attached photo shows two Marine Corsair F-4U's burning after a collision in the Solomons. https://www.facebook.com/pg/airandspace/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10157308006737797&__xts__[0]=68.ARA8XSL5ddnkvLBk9LLjYZb8Qcrpo96ufyCcc4sGDtlULcfm61KlVvNikn7LAHggsEx9nymK90P2J-L74ZkAlSKQkO953NLz9HyMZjE582AP11AhiPPN2-WpxfN8pWZ0s5Q5rJqRrAGX-4I-KNu8vkZbfFk5nVmyl0CoZd-p5PIKvmiKpnRoR4e41gy-XbMl1U52K7B9YYaDW9DkUIDtaQfPFuFurL7ekxWtUIKu8-mlAaDTGZ9_g33mq4j9UKRU0PK6n4QnBThu3d9vpVfOG_8u-MluzSlyftxaPRVKhXbHS8toc4s37JkhoOAIIAOjk-pE4e6RqJpamt6gttvRbO0O4Jhg6Xhb4Btz6yekjpJUl3DS_bqmspHS_D2pVXh-Y4-wykiFn9s-G5MslY2x15Lwd2MlIStP8gnfFCY04tihq39Xvq5n8VheCXiX&__tn__=-UC-R
onetrack Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Willedoo - Colourisation of WW2 photos has been carried out for the last 25 or 30 years, and has speeded up since computers got bigger and better. Even WW1 images have been colourised with startling results. There's even WW1 film footage that has been transferred to video and colourised. The footage is stunning. There are thousands of these colourised WW2 images available today, from factory assembly photos, right through to battlefield and naval photos. Do a Google search using "WW2 photos colorised" and select images. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4976806/The-hell-Pacific-War-color.html 1
willedoo Posted September 4, 2020 Author Posted September 4, 2020 These Smithsonian photos haven't been colourised; they are original colour photographs that the museum has recently scanned to digital format. The colourisation of B&W photos is great. It can add extra clarity to the originals. It must be good software to colour film footage. 1
old man emu Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 It must be good software to colour film footage. It just has to be 24 pictures per second faster. If you think of those PIXAR movies, ans the Super Hero ones with lots of CGI, these movie companies must have computers with dazzling speeds. 1
