RFguy Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 yeah, it would have to form part of the aircraft and go when the aircraft goes. like an umbrella. Anyway, just an idea... Can always fit multiple covers to the aircraft, But, I just cannot imagine doing careful preflight, oil, fueling, washing, etc out of the grass 300m from the gate in CBR. So, no, it will be a hanger somewhere. g
Bosi72 Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 I wonder, if parking on the grass just how much one can get away with some sort of anchored arch cover over your aircraft . In the Canberra airport usage deed , there isn't anything specific to prohibit it except it must form part of the aircraft (my interpretation) If the cover was somehow attached to the aircraft (a rope) permanently, that would form part of the aircraft... arguably maybe . Putting aside anchor requirements and structure rigidity- they can all be overcome with advanced design. I am sure someone would promptly complain about "the structure". Even portable tent would be too big and unstable in strong winds. In my opinion the way forward is full canvas cover which sells around 2.5k for c172, or around 1k for canvas fabric if you are good with sewing. The only negative is amount of work required to put the cover on and off. However I'd love to see alternatives.

[quote="NT5224, post: 573083, member: 4473 Yes a Cover is a pain when by yourself in strong winds. Also how to store it when taking it off wet and icy. Ive also noticed small scratches on the perspect when the straps slap it when taking off and putting on in the wind. However the benefits of a good cover outweigh the inconvenience. Avionics are protected from heat and ultra violet damage over time. If you dont have access to a Hangar, good quality well fitting covers is the next best option. 1
Old Koreelah Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Gyros are starting to look more attractive. 1 1
Roscoe Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Gyros are starting to look more attractive. ??
RFguy Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 yeah ?? not sure what ATC would say if I wanted to line up on 35 at canberra in the gyro. "canberra approach, gyro123 , inbound, 8500ft, NW VFR approach, received delta, request airways clearance " "ATC replies, chokes on coffee and food in laughter"
Old Koreelah Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 ?? Land, stop rotation of wing, lock it fore and aft, taxi to hangar, where your aircraft takes up less space than a small car. 2
RFguy Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I've got nothinf against Gyros . I suggested my mate gets one for flying from canberra to his farm in the blue mtns.. useful. might be easier in a SSTOL...
Nobags Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I looked at hangarage on the moon. Turned it down. Just no atmosphere..... The engine though would only need to be a six of the hp required here. 1
facthunter Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 You do need a hangar if you are serious about looking after your bird. The SUN does a lot of damage to plastic, rubber and paint. Hangar Rash is an issue with(sharing) a hangar, It's got to stand some of the high winds we get also, for obvious reasons. Being at a place where there's activity going on most of the time is a big plus..Nev
RFguy Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Which is why I'd choose Cowra, always people milling around doing stuff, weekends, weekdays.....compared to closer fields of Goulburn, Crookwell, Young, Coota , Cooma, Tumut etc (or Canberra) .
facthunter Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Agree with that. Cowra is a nice town. I think I've stayed there in conjunction with flying events 3 times. The caravan park near the river. Everything's there for you. Including Brumby's. Nev
RFguy Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Cowra : The local council actively supports aviation. Also no landing fees. The aerodrome is gorgeous, with flat, landable Canola pastures in every direction. 1700main, 1000m ish grass X. 1

Thruster88 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 And really good maintenance at Lachlan Valley Aviation, (we do a few RAAus types) plus a well regarded GA flight school Flyoz.
Geoff_H Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 For me parking outside was the same cost as hangaring. Hangar fees use maintenance costs added together seemed to remain constant. Maintenance costs went very high when no hangar. 1
