facthunter Posted November 28, 2020 Posted November 28, 2020 With more sealed runways and taxyways about, the original tailskid has been replaced with a tailwheel and brakes fitted to most of them. They originally had NO brakes. Some fuselages are strengthened for stronger loads in twist to allow flick manouvers to be done.. Canadian ones had canopies and brakes. Where brakes are fitted it's usual to locate the mainwheels further forward to resist tipping onto the nose. A downside of that is to make it a little more hard to keep straight than the original layout. They have lockable Leading edge slats on the upper main planes to be used when taxiing on rough ground to avoid damage to the linkage mechanism. IF unlocked they extend automatically at high wing angles of attack. You have them locked if doing any aeros or spins. Originally they have no electrical system at all. ie No generator or starter or battery. The higher mainplanes have more sweepback to allow better access to the front seat than it's precursor the Gypsy MOTH which is all wood construction with an upright motor with exposed valve gear. Nev
