old man emu Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Not an "airship", but a "blimp". A blimp (technically called a “pressure airship”) is a powered, steerable, lighter-than-air vehicle whose shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases within its envelope. A blimp has no rigid internal structure; if a blimp deflates, it loses its shape. Good to see that they are OK to fly in IMC, or my standards for classifying IMC too high?
Garfly Posted February 23, 2021 Author Posted February 23, 2021 Ha, ha ... if we get technical, OME, it's neither. For a start it's heavier than air; getting lift in part from aerodynamics and in part from aerostatics. But it'd be fun and interesting to see if you could get one on the RAAus register.
old man emu Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Yeah, I did think that the bag did have an aerofoil shape. It must be filled with only just enough gas to lift the bag and puff it into shape.
spacesailor Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 BUT A twin prop !. Is that in the same caturgory as " twin engine ", which is Not allowed. spacesailor
kasper Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 The one in the video would be fine to register in OZ under RAAus in the 95.10 category. It clearly has more than enough wing areas to cover its MTOW and 95.10 allows multi engine and/or multi props so 👍 Same would apply to anything like the the Woopy inflated wing ULM ... 1
SSCBD Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 We don't want any RAA involvement - look what they have done so far. Also no CASA. - Pirates forever! However very kool! 2
skippydiesel Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Ethereal! - dont look like they would handle any sort of wind.

facthunter Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Too affected by winds to be practical. Nev 1

facthunter Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Fair question but they haven't put up a very solid argument yet. Nev
Garfly Posted February 23, 2021 Author Posted February 23, 2021 Yeah, I suppose, like recreationalists, they'd have to pick their days; and time of day. Recent improvements in wx forecasts would probably be part of the argument.
facthunter Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Hot air balloons have difficulties if the wind get's up. Nev
Garfly Posted February 23, 2021 Author Posted February 23, 2021 Auto translate subtitles are available if you click through to watch on YouTube.
spacesailor Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Didn't use the " Auto translate subtitles " As we have to lean this Metric language !. But it did look a great airship. If you use internal ' lashings ' to make a more aero-dynamic shape, does it become an ' airship ' rather than a BLIMP, ?. spacesailor
facthunter Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 A blimp has no rigid framework. When the load is removed it will go skywards unless tethered. (ANY lighter than air machine). Nev
spacesailor Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 An airship with Nonridigid internal ' lashings ' would also go Flat, when deflated. spacesailor
