RFguy Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 (edited) Yesterday in the course of regular maintenance on the Rotax, found a EGT sensor that the hose clamp BAND had fractured . Fractured not in the punched band , but the continuous band about 1cm from the fixed end of the band clamp. Permitting exhaust gases to escape early... One to look out for. TT clamp ~ 1840 hours.... TT engine ~ 500 h. Edited June 26, 2021 by RFguy
skippydiesel Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 This EGT probe/sender concept works amazingly well - for a while. Yours has done quite well. The whole thing is subject to a fair bit of heat/vibration damage. I suspect it has been subjected to over enthusiastic tightening - this combined with heating/cooling cycles, has probably made the metal "brittle" so failing.
onetrack Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 A lot of bands/clamps are made from 304 stainless, which has a lower tensile strength than 316 stainless. Always use 316 stainless bands/clamps, for greater strength and higher corrosion resistance. 1
RFguy Posted June 26, 2021 Author Posted June 26, 2021 (edited) tempered/heat treated. then again... the again and again.... and again. Edited June 26, 2021 by RFguy
onetrack Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 (edited) And 316 withstands that constant tempering and re-tempering far better than any other metal or alloy. Edited June 26, 2021 by onetrack 1
