Thruster88 Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 What caused the aircraft to only have one wheel🤔
IBob Posted February 26, 2022 Author Posted February 26, 2022 Don't know yet. The wishbone with attached wheel was still there, something on the olio or spring assembly under the fuselage has parted company, allowing the wishbone and wheel to hang down unrestrained.
IBob Posted February 26, 2022 Author Posted February 26, 2022 (edited) Correction: Still don't know. But the way the damaged u/c tracks after he lands suggests that the wishbone and wheel assembly are intact? Edited February 26, 2022 by IBob
onetrack Posted February 26, 2022 Posted February 26, 2022 There must be nothing worse than having the wheels fall off, when you're airborne.
IBob Posted February 26, 2022 Author Posted February 26, 2022 (edited) Looking again at that landing: The wishbone and wheel are hanging straight down under the aircraft, so on landing one of 3 things can happen with it: It remains vertical and digs in in some way, perhaps tearing off. It tracks left and folds under the aircraft. It tracks right, where it is out of harm's way. It looks very much as though the pilot deliberately sideslipped left all the way in, which would deflect the wheel to the right, out of harm's way. Edited February 26, 2022 by IBob 2 1 2
facthunter Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Wing down onto the good wheel and hold the other one off as long as possible. Nev
Marty_d Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 I had to land someone's model plane for them once when a wheel came off on takeoff (very successfully!) but glad I haven't had to do it in full size. 1
facthunter Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Models are harder .That's why I went to the real thing. Nev 2
Marty_d Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 I was doing both concurrently for a while (as a lot of people do, judging by the number of R/C models you see in shed/hangar pics!) You're right Nev, the real thing is easier, unfortunately the hourly cost is a lot higher though.
facthunter Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Would a Thruster or Drifter cost much more than SOME of the RC models? It was the ever increasing costs of models that forced my decision. There wasn't an ultralight movement then though. Everything had to be GA registered. Druin Turbulent etc There were Gyro's about but they were suicidal..Nev 1
F10 Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Good job, you can see he held off the bad leg as long as possible, nice! 1
