Nowadays you can get weather reports for your suburb, which is kind of nice but I saw something today that has me confused.

The forecasts include temperature, clouds, pressure, precipitation and so on.

How can you have RAIN when the CLOUDS are CLEAR?

If there are any clouds I can get that you can get rain falling from them and if "unlucky" (or lucky) it falls in the sensor, and so you are told of rain in the area.

But when it says CLOUDS: CLEAR and shows RAIN I don't understand.

Even if they weren't "real time" and from .... 20 minutes ago.....   How can you have RAIN if the sky is CLEAR?

I don't know if that is rhetorical or not.

You can have rain fall in a clear area as it descends from clouds that are a considerable distance away. If there's strong winds where the rain if falling, the winds can carry the rain quite a distance. This phenomenon is often called "sunshowers".

You can also have rain fall from clouds as they dissipate. The French have a name for rain from a cloudless sky - "Serein".

Ok, thanks.

I guess that does make sense in most ways.

I guess I am just getting caught up on the small things.

It's good to have a very thorough understanding of weather, too many people have died because of their lack of understanding of weather conditions, and adverse signs in the sky.

With weather, it's better to be a LIVE Coward than a dead Hero.  I'm living testimony to that.   Nev

Speaking of WX; this recent AvWeb article is a good read (needs some down-under adjustment, of course)

Weather Deconstructed

As a kid, did you ever take something apart to see how it worked?

Let’s do that with the atmosphere to better understand it.

Was that Bribie island you meant Space? I have the distinction of capsizing a sailboat in Pumice Passage which is near there. In 4kts wind....  that took some serious bad sailing.
