was driving home yesterday afternoon and grabbed this photograph looking towards the east. This is a cloud out over the ocean just off the Gold Coast.   Pretty powerful activity going on, the photograph doesn't really do it justice

Wowee! You wouldn't want to get caught up in that, would you!! :yikes:

 

I can recall reading about a pilot in Germany many years ago, who flew a glider into a cumulonimbus cloud. The glider broke up with the vicious air currents in the cloud, and the pilots body was found miles away - encased in ice!!

The same happened to a young Japanese paraglidder pilot who was flying out near Manila in New South Wales. The temperatures were close to 40° and they found  her frozen body 24-hours later apparently still rockhard except for the thin layer of skin which had thawed out.

Cumulus whopperus, Keep well away especially from under and ahead of the "anvil" where you'll usually get hail sometimes in clear air,
