facthunter Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) The "BOOK" for what? FLAP varies in it's effect. FOWLER is about the only one that will help much with lift. IF the field is soft any weight off the wheels will help you get moving faster/ Know your plane. Having the wheels too far to the rear is common with some U/L's and that is a problem. Be ready to give it away if things are not happening right with the acceleration. The BOOK doesn't mention ground effect, the one thing that helps make low speed flight possible when that's where you get yourself which can also be when going around from a #@*% landing where you have to get rid of some flap to get anywhere.. kgwilson Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 The book was a Flying school training manual. The "Real" book is the POH & the performance charts do not specify soft field TO criteria. It only has data for a paved, level, dry runway with full throttle before brake release. OAT, Pressure altitude, headwind & gross weight all need to be taken in to account along with the type/state of the surface with 25 deg of flap.
facthunter Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 You can't cover such variable factors like long grass and soft earth AND other factors like I've mentioned. That's why a "give it away place" (Abort) on the runway must be decided. on such RARE occasions. You should do THAT anyway if the plane doesn't accelerate as it should. Nev 1
SGM Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I am reliably informed the cause was fuel selector valve human error - there are four tanks on this one. 1 1
facthunter Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 They all need GO juice. Fuel selectors feature frequently in starvation incidents and always have. Nev
