A lot of people are relocating away from the major cities and relying on the Internet for professional work, or if they have a service business, re-establishing in small towns where rents for premises are so much less than in the metropolitan areas. I know of a specialist motor vehicle restorer who move everything from Sydney to a country town. His speciality did not require his business to be located in a city, and he says that the move was a really good thing for his family. He told me that his daughter who is in her final years of Secondary education says that she is doing so much better than she was in the city. 1

Nev Where ever you are, development will, unfortunately, continue unabated, as long as the Australian population is growing (primarily immigration). Depending on where you prefer to live (Inner City, Urban sprawl, Outer fringe, Within an hour or two) will dictate the cost of the dwelling & the life style. Sydney like all the other cities of Australia &the World has satellite towns (for some reason Australia call these sub developments cities - go figure) most of which have fair (not good in Australia) commuting (to City) systems. Generally property costs are lower and lifestyles more tranquil. "Quality of Life" is a matter of individual preference and has little or nothing to do with other peoples standards, wants, needs. Where you live now will have a big effect on where you move to. If you are a city person, you will probably want to see what things that make up a city lifestyle are most important to you. The same argument applies to small towns and villages. If you enjoy anything with a taste of Culture, keep out of Sydney and look at Melbourne. Sydney has a wonderful opera house, but it is mainly used as a backdrop for tourists' photographs of the Harbour Bridge. How important is making a living going to be for you? Does your need to earn an income affect where you do it? I would suggest that if you want to live near Sydney that you explore the Southern Highlands between Mittagong and Canberra. 1

The criteria for "Quality of Life" must therefor fit mine and everyone else's - I can not agree.. How do you accommodate the difference between those who see inner city living as being the ultimate lifestyle and those who see living in the bush the same way? Both parties would claim their decision to live where they do, is all about "Quality of Life". There is no doubt (in my mind) that the statement "Quality of Life" is a subjective one, with many people, living in very diffrent environments, laying claim to it. 2 1

The big cities are getting too full of people and traffic etc. either side of Newcastle would not be too far by the sounds of it. Would be more opportunity of hangar spaces I believe. For me North Queensland with Central NSW beaches would be perfect. Hope will barrack for Queensland at State of Origin time. Edited June 4, 2023 by Blueadventures 2

To meet the 1.5 hours max travel you will have to use the train from Campbelltown or Leppington. Whatever you do, don't use the freeways. They are parking lots during peak hour and if ever there is a collision, you can't get off them. There are plenty of alternate routes to get you where the freeways finally get you.
sfGnome Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 I lived in Europe for a number of years, and when we got back to Sydney, I couldn’t wait to leave again (hence our recent move to the Southern Highlands). My wife uses the train when she has to go to the office in central Sydney, but we use the car for anywhere else (and yes, the peak hour seems to stretch for about 4 hours both morning and evening, so the best bet is to work from home). However, if you don’t mind it being a bit colder than the rest of Sydney, then Southern Highlands has to be the nicest place to live (IMHO 🙂). Oh, and ignore the cane toads and their obsession with rugby league. The heat fries their brains. Everybody knows that the Swans are the team to follow… 😛 2 1
