FlyingVizsla Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 Light plane crashes into water off Queensland's Sunshine Coast - ABC News WWW.ABC.NET.AU Two people are winched from a life raft after a light plane crash off the Sunshine Coast this morning.
FlyingVizsla Posted November 10, 2023 Author Posted November 10, 2023 (edited) Now updated with location & plane Cessna Challenger Learjet ditched into the ocean at Barwon Banks, 20 nautical miles east off Mooloolaba Changed title to reflect this new info. Edited November 10, 2023 by FlyingVizsla Update location & plane
Rastus Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 Actually was a Cessna this time! But not a Challenger or Learjet. FlightRadar24 shows a C421 VH-VPY that tracked east for a while then turning around and gently drifting down to sea level. Well done to the crew for successfully ditching the aeroplane. Robert
FlyingVizsla Posted November 10, 2023 Author Posted November 10, 2023 Thanks for that Robert, unfortunately I can no longer edit the Title. I wonder where the Coast Guard got their info from? Still, thankful that it ended with a bit of embarrassment, loss of $$s but not loss of life.
facthunter Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 A Cessna 421 when an engine has failed and has a cowl damaged will not fly level. If you don't have excess height , you won't make it back (or very far). Good they got out of it. Nev
Carbon Canary Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 Similar to many light twins after one engine inoperative - the operating engine will take you to the scene of the crash. Glad these guys got out of it OK.
Chris SS Posted November 10, 2023 Posted November 10, 2023 They were carrying fuel for an 11 hour flight. I reckon they would have had ferry tanks and been way over gross. Two up with normal fuel the 421 will still climb.
facthunter Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 CC that's a bit of an urban myth that goes back to DH Dragons and Miles Gemini's and even Avro Ansons. The Cessna Golden Eagle would have to meet more stringent requirements. Nev
red750 Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 FlightAware and FlightRadar24 have its original destination as Pago Pago. 2
ClintonB Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 At least they were well prepared for flight over water and it appears to have paid off in surviving. I assume ditching would not have been pleasant even with no wheels down. well done on a good job. 3
