skippydiesel Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Back then, early 1980's, I did not know who Bob Hoover was. I was invited, by my boss (a Bonanza owner/pilot,) to fly in to an air show at Edmonton, Alberta. The highlight of the show was one Bob Hoover in, I think, in a Shrike Commander. Bob put that aircraft through a series of incredible maneuvers, before cutting the engines, making a "dead stick" landing & taxying up to the crowd, all without any further engine power. The real surprise for me was when this lanky old, bespectacled gent, with a pretty tatty looking straw hat, emerged from the aircraft, to the applause of the crowd. I was/am reminded of an old saying "Hansom Is, As Handsome Does" and Bob was very handsome that day. 6
facthunter Posted March 9 Posted March 9 The FAA in their wisdom cancelled his licence and when he came to Australia to fly his routine at Avalon he was issued an Australian licence by a Barry Diamond who was In Charge of the VIC-TAS region of CASA so I got to see him perform the routine you describe. Bob has the sort of background you can only dream of. A man for the time. Nev 1 2
