Damien Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I just checked my voltage 14 volts at 3000 at around 5000 RPM getting 17 Volts at my battery up to around 21 Volts at around 6000 I believe I need to replace it. Any ideas?
facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 That's going to wreck any kind of battery. WHAT type is in there at the moment? Nev
skippydiesel Posted June 13 Posted June 13 (edited) Damien - There is a huge range of voltage regulator and opinions on what is best/most cost effective. Do a google search - Everything from ride on mower & motorcycle units, to Rotax OM (the most costly by far). Everyone swears by their particular choice, so very hard to get an unbiased recommendation. Much will depend on your budget and willingness to try something other than OM. The following, non Rotax, alternatives have some enthusiastic users and detractors: Silent Hektik Ducati John Deere AVC1 Carr 5115 Advanced Power Whatever you get, make sure it is mounted in a well vented area - VR's have cooling fins to dissipate heat, so need some airflow for long service life. RFGuy or one of the other electronics experts, on this Forum, are possibly your best bet for advice. Edited June 13 by skippydiesel

facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Would affect everything potentially. No pun intended but if you like it you can have it. Nev

facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 (edited) Could be sulphated up and have a high resistance. When charged the Plate colour should be dark brown and grey. Nev Edited June 13 by facthunter more content.

facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 First thing I'd do is replace it I think, but you'll have to check the voltages and charge rate straight away. Nev
BrendAn Posted June 13 Posted June 13 i wouldn't bother helping this bloke. something dodgy here. i gave him a replacement tacho and mailed it at my own cost and he has given me the cold shoulder since. strange.

facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Thought it had a clear plastic casing. Sulphated is when a lead acid Battery sits discharged for too long. White stuff builds up on the Plates. Nev

White stuff builds up on the Plates. Nev Oh ok not he battery is fine nev no build up it’s just as the increased rpm the voltage to the battery and then in turn to the instruments also increases to a point where it’s sometimes around 18 volts now in my limited understanding I’d believe that the voltage regulator should limit to about 14.5 v max and increase the current for an increase in rpm while holding a steady voltage to a point where the battery is charged and then floats the current?
facthunter Posted June 13 Posted June 13 I only have a PC. If I'm away I'm essentially out of contact on line. Sometimes Microsoft mucks things up for a while also. For ME life used to be a BEACH. Nev
