danny_galaga Posted September 17 Posted September 17 (edited) Im pretty sure I know which plane this is and have talked to the pilot a number of times, nice fellow. If him, it's a Rotec powered biplane. Glad he's not seriously injured. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-17/light-plane-crash-scenic-rim-boonah-airfield-queensland/104360076 Edited September 17 by danny_galaga 1
kgwilson Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Glad the pilot is not seriously hurt. Any large tree seems to be a magnet for crash landing aircraft. Even if there is only 1 tree in a paddock the aircraft will hit it. 1

red750 Posted September 17 Posted September 17 The Daily Mail reports the crash as "off Degan Road in Dugandan". From Google Maps, Degen Rd is right at the end of the runway. 1
danny_galaga Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 That makes sense. The hangar to the left with the plane in front of it is where I keep my plane. The paddock straight across the road from that hangar is quite scrubby. I sometimes go over and chat to the horses in it. The scenery in that video looks like it's that paddock now you mention it.
danny_galaga Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 Hmmm, according to the report, the pilot is in his fifties, but I'm pretty sure the owner is older. So either a typo or someone else was flying. He was selling the plane.

red750 Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Whitney Scamp · The Encyclopedia of Aircraft David C. Eyre AEROPEDIA.COM.AU The Whitney scamp is a light sporting biplane with open cockpits designed by Mr W ‘Bill” Whitney in Queensland for amateur construction by Mr. Hargrave. 3
danny_galaga Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 I believe it was a one off. The current owner bought it and finished it. 1
Litespeed Posted September 18 Posted September 18 What a beautiful aircraft. Such a loss of a wonderful machine 1

kgwilson Posted September 18 Posted September 18 The wings being torn off would have absorbed a lot of the energy. Given the condition of the fuselage and the type of aircraft the actual impact speed is likely to have been much lower than it would have been with a higher performance aircraft. I have no idea of it's performance envelope but I imagine it would cruise at between 70 & 80 knots Max. 2
Richard Stewart Posted September 21 Posted September 21 Richard Stewart ,Pilot ANGEL 1, I took the only video of the aircraft take off & crash ,....from Boonah strip....To all pilots ,( don't do abrupt pull ups during take off....I have the audio & visual on this account..I was there in person camera in hand filmed it all........they cut off the top port wings to extract the pilot.....my advice to you all.........Fly like you were trained for .....I gave Nigel Arnott..the video ....he is Handling the issues.........I'm engineer of 42 years and engine reconditioning expert ....... Respect ..each other & think ...it could be you next.. 1 1 4 1

danny_galaga Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 Hi Richard. Do you think the pilot may have had some sort of problem? Either airframe issue or perhaps maybe a medical drama of some sort? Having watched a number of flights it doesn't seem like something he would deliberately do? Was the engine running smoothly through the whole thing? 1

Abrupt take off attitude can occur in some aircraft if elevator trim not set for take off speeds and is inadvertently still back for slower landing flare speed / trim setting; after the last landing setting. (Not meant to be instruction just my experience.) 2 2

danny_galaga Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 Hopefully I can get back to the airfield this weekend and I can see how he's going 1

Dont want to buy in to any incident speculator however - In a small aircraft, trim forces should never be such that the pilot can not overcome them by physical force. 1 2
