Too all concern about the incident, at Boonah ... 

 

I was personally present on the airstrip, taking videos of the morning's activities.

 

I can tell you from first-hand account,

The aircraft in question had no engine issues as it taxied past me down to do pre take off checks & radio calls by the pilot were as per normal.  ....

 

I have full video from takeoff roll, full power full rpm, to lift off level flight full power to gain required airspeed after wheels lift, he kept level low full power all the way towards my postion ..at no time did the engine miss a beat .......... then at rotation to climb ...........he raised the nose to high angle of attack ....my first thoughts 

.........oh .... don't do that.

 

You're not going to yank her off the deck now are you ........yes that's just what took place .... nose went 60 degrees plus, engine went .....cut...I'm stopped.

 

..........inertia took him up a few more feet, then pilot rolled nose over to obtain best glide for EMG straight ahead.....nose down 60 degrees ...my camera still filming........................ENGINE OUT.............. wings level...

Hi Richard,

 

I don't want to bust your balls about this, since you are a very rare thing-  a witness who knows about aircraft and who filmed it. The devil is in the detail here. How far do you reckon he was from you when you hear the engine quit in the video? If he was say about 300 metres away from you, you have to wind back the video pretty much a full second. That is where the engine actually quit.

I don't know enough about this configuration of biplane. Could it be that trimmed for takeoff under full power, it would be inclined to pitch up with an engine failure? Or maybe when the engine has quit, he has pulled back to gain height and then pitch down for glide?

Pilot performs his run ups, I hear no issues from my end, I'm watching and listening. for mag check yes, I can hear that from my spot.... if you can't that's your problem..lol.

pilot then makes radio call...............as we all are aware the glider boys have the old external speaker on the building for all to hear on the grass areas.... awareness again was all covered in personal situational awareness.... MEMO YEARS AGO ...BLA BLA..

 

Ok we have lined up.... throttle up, Bird rolling ,rpm max ,sounds like a home sick angel ,I even say on the audio, well johnny we have a F18 hornet about to lift off out of Boonah, look at him go...... meanwhile I set video before so it has full 4 times zoom in motion with full audio...........Maverick is about to do his thing. .........................................

 

Aircraft off the ground , in reasonable distance don't have my six inch rule out to check but looks like it's a go ,he has level flight building up his level flight speed ........my mind has begun to think this is going to be a last minute pull up to show off...................................and that's how it looks on the camera. Right next to me he pulled her up............................full afterburner take off.......oh no I think ,,,I know what might happen next as ,I've seen this all before ....yes ,engines gone ...........he is a sling shot ..now, till he gets the old nose over.......I watch him and I make the comments to johnny on the video that he lost the engine he is going to crash call triple zero for me when I send this video to you when I terminate it to proceed on foot to crash site....

 

those of you who are paying attention here must realize I've filmed this then sent to person I trust the video & called at same time to explain the video and confirm to  him to call 000 , Boonah airfield location and I'm off the phone now heading on foot ,,,...he respond ................got video ,understand called 000 go to pilot ,call me I will be on standby........this all takes place in seconds..................................................................

Thanks for the detail. Are you saying you observed two problems? That he pulled up violently/prematurely and that after he did his engine also failed? Could it be then that he could climb at that steep angle normally, but this time the engine quit on him? 

 

Incidentally, I just bought Divinyls - What a Life on vinyl. Been getting into LPs again and that was one of my favourite albums back in the day 🙂

@Richard Stewart - for gods sake, please format your posts and stop using capital letters in your submissions. It's incredibly hard to follow your ramblings to date and, to be frank, my eyes glazed over and I CBF'd taking in anything except the most basic points from them.

You say there was no engine misfire or problem, then nek minit say there was an engine failure. It matters not the flight attitude if the engine stopped unless inverted or pushing negative G's with a fuel or oil system not designed for that - I can routinely climb out at 25-30* nose up in cool weather and light weights for sustained periods, and regularly turn crosswind halfway down the 1100m runway - and yes, that's at 500AGL... 

An engine failure in climb and you're blaming the pilot...Bit rough methinks, no matter your opinion as an eye witness. Perhaps you should post the video so we can make our own deductions.

pilot then makes radio call...............as we all are aware the glider boys have the old external speaker on the building for all to hear on the grass areas.... awareness again was all covered in personal situational awareness.... MEMO YEARS AGO ...BLA BLA..

 

Ok we have lined up.... throttle up, Bird rolling ,rpm max ,sounds like a home sick angel ,I even say on the audio, well johnny we have a F18 hornet about to lift off out of Boonah, look at him go...... meanwhile I set video before so it has full 4 times zoom in motion with full audio...........Maverick is about to do his thing. .........................................

 

Aircraft off the ground , in reasonable distance don't have my six inch rule out to check but looks like it's a go ,he has level flight building up his level flight speed ........my mind has begun to think this is going to be a last minute pull up to show off...................................and that's how it looks on the camera. Right next to me he pulled her up............................full afterburner take off.......oh no I think ,,,I know what might happen next as ,I've seen this all before ....yes ,engines gone ...........he is a sling shot ..now, till he gets the old nose over.......I watch him and I make the comments to johnny on the video that he lost the engine he is going to crash call triple zero for me when I send this video to you when I terminate it to proceed on foot to crash site....

 

those of you who are paying attention here must realize I've filmed this then sent to person I trust the video & called at same time to explain the video and confirm to  him to call 000 , Boonah airfield location and I'm off the phone now heading on foot ,,,...he respond ................got video ,understand called 000 go to pilot ,call me I will be on standby........this all takes place in seconds..................................................................

IMO, I would suggest Richard stick to repairing engines, and avoid trying to become an immediate on-site air crash investigation specialist - and perhaps take up a professional writing course, so he can communicate with others in a precise and succinct manner - as RFguy has done so very well.

 

I've seen some erratic forum ramblings in my time, but Richards postings take the cake.

The most important thing is he is safe, and you have video that could be helpful. Being Ra Aus that's the end of the line investigation-wise. It would be instructive to see the video. Or at least contact Brian so he can view it and comment on it.

 

Not remembering what happened doesn't mean he did anything wrong. Don't make it about you. Enlighten us, but don't get upset that we are finding it hard to follow your posts. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what's a video worth? Why describe it when you can just show it?
