RAAus tailwheel rating

Hi all,

I have a friend in Ballarat area needing to do a tailwheel rating. Willing to travel a bit.

Not being in the RAAus game myself, I have no idea who he could go to or where. Nor does he. Any ideas?

I did mine with a GA flight school, Camden NSW.

 

Rumour has it there is an RAA operation in Dubbo, NSW.

Wings out West at Dubbo, operates a Legend Cub tailwheel based flying school.

contact Bruce Vickers at Lethbridge - one of the best instructors I have encountered - not sure how much he is working at the moment

 

I learnt on Chippies, flown a lot of other TW types and encountered a lot of average instructors - Bruce is a bit of a legend in my view

 

If you want to do a CIR go to Steve Pearce at Bini's

 

Very few good instructors around in my view - there a few other TW instructors I could recommend but BV is local for your mate

AH, he's done his ticket at Lethbridge. Has found nothing tailwheel there.

Dubbo and Camden is too far, but thanks anywho.

The flying school (s) GPA etc don't have a TW online - as I said contact Bruce Vickers - BV can be contacted through Garry Baum (Lethbridge airfield owner) or Michael Pendergast (a friend of BV)

I have a Super Decathlon at Moorabbin. As does Learn To Fly Melbourne | Aviation School | Flight Training More expensive than Tocumwal and other places.

 

Peninsula Aero Club is a bit cheaper with a Standard Decathlon.

Okay, I'll let him know. Decathlon is way bigger and heavier than the MINIMAX he's completing.

It is interstate from Ballarat, but I'll put in shout out for Adelaide biplane at Aldinga. Most of the aircraft they have are tailwheel. Raaus: Cubcrafters sports cub, Aeronca Champ.

VH: Decathlon, Tigermoth, 2nd Champ, Great lakes biplane, Waco biplane.

I did my endorsement in the sports cub which is very versatile and lots of fun.

Martin from the UK ex BA who owns the joint, is very experienced and runs a tight ship.

Aldinga is well setup for tailwheel with grass runways on all 4 points of the compass.

They regularly graduate young Raaus pilots who have only flown tailwheel, which really sets them up for a great career with stick and rudder skills ..

Tailwheel planes are directionally unstable when on the ground but so are tri gear when you land nosewheel first. Called "wheelbarrowing". Landing too fast. There was a spate of it when tailwheel planes became more rare.  There's two ways to land a Tailwheel plane. 3. point (SLOW) and wheel it on. (uses more runway). That's just the start of it. It would be possible to do an entire flying career without ever flying a T/W Type. Just don't fly with lazy feet. The pedals are not footrests.   Nev

Moorabbin prices are a joke. Enough to put most people off raas . $490 per hr for a jabiru

The benefits of Moorabbin are that a pilots get exposure to Controlled airspace/aerodrome, improve situational awareness, practice radio procedures, which is the main hurdle for many RAAus pilots.

Learning tailwheel teaches how to fly an aeroplane.

If the endorsement you want is not available, in your area, through RAA school, it may be with a GA provider. No brainer!

An raaus pilot can not fly in cta so while it is good experience it is also a lot of money for no real gain with an raaus certificate.

My understanding is yes, GA endorsements count for RAA.

Does a tailwheel endorsement still count as a flight review? If so, fill in the form for the RPL, do the tailwheel endorsement, and maybe you have an RPL, RAA and GA tailwheel endorsements and GA and RAA AFRs in one fell swoop?

Makes your apology worthless - djpacro is a very experienced pilot and I find his contributions considered and valuable.

 

Sadly, there are only a very few now who provide useful comments - used to be a lot more but they have "dropped off" - probably eroded by the slow drip

I have only flown tailwheel since I started doing my RPC and ended up travelling up to Wings out West from Victoria. Can't recommend them enough. Great instructors and the Legend Cubs are a pleasure to fly (not that I have anything to compare them to)

 

When I spoke to RAAus about flying schools offering tailwheel training they said Wings out West was the only option, I couldn't find anyone in Victoria offering tailwheel training through RAAus and I called all the schools listed on the RAAus page. A few other schools that listed tailwheel training said they no longer had a tailwheel aircraft available due to lack of demand.

 

Flying with Grace at Narromine offers tailwheel training in a Legend Cub and it's good to see Sport Aviation and Adelaide Biplanes have a couple of options too. I'll have to do some travelling and get some flights in other aircraft so I can have something to compare the Legend Cubs to. I'm keen to fly as many different aircraft as possible

Pity RAAus didn't seem to know which other schools to recommend.

 

 

With regards to the people offering training in a Decathlon out of Moorabbin, my understanding is I can't fly VH registered aircraft under my RPC and no flying in controlled airspace unless I convert to RPL.

Is it possible to do endorsements in aircraft I can not fly solo?
