CASA still wants to hang on to the Class 5 medical requirement as if this is necessary for proficiency in communicating with ATC. The rest of it is very welcome news.

More work and cost for RAAus (members) amending the operations manual and syllabus and then getting it approved etc. Or anyone wanting a controlled airspace endorsement could go right now and get the RPL and the add on endorsement. The training will be required either way. A lot of schools now have aircraft with numbers and letters and instructors that can instruct in either type.

I stand to be corrected:

 

True anyone can go for their RPL and then use an RAA registered aircraft, to enter CTA.  I am not sure why, I get the impression it may be a bit of a grey area. I know its done, have myself, I wonder what would happen if there was a serious incident, involving an RAA registered aircraft in CTA????😈

I suspect you're cobbling up some imaginary scenario there.

If a person and aircraft are compliant today they are flying on the same training standard and compliance status as anyone else so there would be no reason to head to any particular Self Administering Aviation body.

 

On the other had if RAA were to do what Bird Dog's statement is implying, and there were differences from PPL, CPl etc. and the incidenmt was caused by those differences then yes, CASA would need to investigate. CASA, having authorised a change to the self administering RAA would incur legal liability.

My understanding is if the pilot has the endorsement and maybe medical? and the aircraft is suitably equipped with transponder if required and instruments that are current with CAO 100.5 then it is all good. Might be something to add to the FAQ list.

Great news. We have had this in NZ for a long time. Now its up to all pilots to ensure that they are up to the job and demonstrate that they can be as professional as the next pilot regardless of licence type.

i wish we could set up a new organisation for real ultralight fliers and let the wannabe ga pilots have raaus.

all the people that fly simple cheap rag and tube in the bush will keep getting slugged higher fees to help cover costs for the others to fly cta and heavier aircraft.

Muppets! They'd get a better result for medical incidents if they mandated not eating dodgy prawns before flying......

I think you have a pathway for this. As far as I know RAAus doesn’t have a monopoly on Part 149? Happy to be corrected on this.

Be careful what you wish for. You might ask where the money is being spent and are the fantastic plastics subsidising the rag and tube or the other way around.

Is a motor glider classified as a glider or as an aeroplane?

been tried a while ago, died a death for some reason.   Ian (admin) may have the details.   Be nice to have but if wishes were dollars etc etc
