Yea, I probably just got deceived by that clamp you fitted, makes the filter look shorter (the earlier filters were shorter)

I wasnt commenting on the dirt.

BTW, Rotax dont recomend fitting any sort of retainer/safety to the filter but your choice of course and does no harm.

but next time you fit one hand tight, try removing by hand after an engine run.

I've never known one come lose.

The exhaust interference with the filter is common, I have to loosen that header every oil change.  (I do oil and filter every 50 hours, even though I run Mogas)

Oh and that crappy torx head magnetic plug was superseded by a hex-bolt head type some time ago, they are much easier to remove without damage but rather expensive (Apologies I now see the Different mag plugs were already discussed)

I purchased a new Chrysler Galant 1500 in 1971. The oil filter undid itself on a couple of occasions. The most memorable was on the Mount Cotton hill climb where I spun out on my own oil. Another time was on Milton Road in Brisbane while racing some hoon who was obviously driving dangerously.

it was not an uncommon occurrence on race vehicles in the 70’s and 80’s so clamping them became a habit.

As Red said, the clamp is not necessary on the Rotax but does no harm. I've never used one. I mark mine with a bit of torque seal and it's never moved.

.........Then there was the guy who bought Ford oil hose from Supercheap, and down he went. Good forced landing but a lot of damage. I can remember him saying "God made sh!t; Ford turned it into cars.

No, you can go on this site and read all his reports and a running commentary on his fortunes, including getting lost when he didn't recognise Gippsland and I mean coming south off the mountains.

Seems to me the moral of this story (fictional or true) is don't use materials equipment on/in your aircraft that you don't know meet/exceed the manufactures standards.

If in doubt purchase OM  products😈

Of course not. I do got top Supercheap from time to time, I do look up their ring binders and get Part Numbers for items and even though you might not believe it they do fit the Falcon when you take them home. Is there anything wrong with that?

Did you find the report he made?  It was actually about a Recreational aircraft and it was actually a good lesson in safety backing up what you had said.

True but where do you even find these stories

Genuine Factory approved Parts  carry a warrantee  and an assurance that it meets OEM standards .  Just any aftermarket  No name, is lucky to fit with no comeback. Some Brand names like Koni or Bilstein  Brembo may be better than original  There would be oil filter brands that can be relied on and SOME may even be superior to original, but plenty I would NOT  fit if they were free. Especially on an aeroplane. ,IF the fit of the thread on the nipple is not good, check why.

Today was another uncomfortably hot day. I just feel like sleeping it away but forced myself outside for a couple of hours working on the carport.

Trench1.thumb.JPG.5e26c219c690e9039ed7bdae9d928699.JPG

I realised the other night, when I should have been sleeping, that I need to find some pipe. The proposed airstrip has a couple of natural gullies heading in from the north. If I just level out an airstrip it won't last beyond the first downpour.

Trench2.thumb.JPG.ced8bdf5aca2fe56afcf82763d5708b1.JPG

So when the day heated up I jumped into Tonka and cut a couple of trenches across the strip. I was going to use Zimba, the little CAT excavator but it would be slow work and I'd be in the open air, no AC. I can't get any deeper without a heavier machine or a jackhammer so I think there's going to be a lot a fill.

I budgeted for my lessons and plane but it never stretched to building an airstrip so now I'm searching for abandoned pipes for drainage.

I just spotted one of out training aircraft doing circuits. Pretty tidy of his turns, definitely not me 😉

It just shows you can't get away with doing the wrong thing up their. Out flight trainer can be sitting back at his desk keeping track.

Whoever it is has had the circuit to themselves until now. Another plane has just turned onto the runway.

How's your training going?

I'm not training until I get my plane in the air. It'll save me at least $150 p/hr and I'm better off knowing my own plane.

I was ready to go solo but I'll be a bit rusty by the time I get back.

I'm tired of chasing the meaning of acronyms in all this paper work the feed us. Yesterday I printed out 28 pages of acronyms and their meanings. Today I find one that's not on the list.

PILOT CERTIFICATE FLIGHT TEST 9. Prior to a Student or Converting Pilot being recommended for the issue of a Pilot Certificate, they will be required to undertake a flight test with a CFI (or higher approval holder when assigned by the HFO). The Student or Converting Pilot will satisfactorily demonstrate to the CFI their competence to control the aircraft in accordance with the RAAus Syllabus of Flight Training.

What is a HFO?
