Found this at a garage sale recently. A common WW2 piece used in many aircraft. If anyone can decipher the engraving that would be great! Possibly squadron/airframe specific.

REF No. 6A/1538. The 10.44 on the face may be date related.

ICAN would be obsolete OK in an old Warbird I guess for looks. ( Single pointer) Based on a different standard atmosphere Same as the Old Nickel plated Brass Prayer wheel. I'd have one of those somewhere. Nev

K4445 was an RAF 33 squadron Hawker Hart, but AFAIK, that type of altimeter wasnt in use when Harts were in service, unless perhaps that particular Hart soldiered on into ww2 as a general hack or something and go some instrument refits???

Thanks for that. I thought they were Y's and/or 7's but 4 is a possibility. KY lead me to 162 RAF Sqn that operated many different types.

Aah now that actually seems more likely don't know why I read them as 4s.....K7775 was a vickers Wellesley of 47 sqdn based Eritrea.

One Wellesley  did make a record breaking non stop flight from the middle East to Australia but I don't know what actual airframe.

Another similar one on eBay, with similar hand-etched markings.

And another one below that was recently sold, with the description stating the hand-etched numbers are a "store reference" number.

Onetrack, yea I think he is right about it being a store reference and the whole aircraft serial thing I wondered about is probably be is a red herring..sorry Cyrano

I do notice that all the ones Ive seen of that type have "43" after the "/" maybe thats the generic type reference
