BrendAn Posted March 10 Posted March 10 can anyone tell me if i can cut and join this antenna lead without losing performance or causing some other issue.
Underwood Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Yes, providing you can make a reliable new connection with a 50 Ohm connector , the coax length on these bought antenna isnt tuned in any way its just sold with a usable length but lengthening it a lot will reduce the signal/noise ratio a bit 1 1

I don't want to lengthen it. Just want to cut and join to the old lead because it is a pain to remove from the AC.
BurnieM Posted March 10 Posted March 10 I always replace the whole coax length even if the work takes significant time. 20 years of corrossion but leaving the last 10% does not make a lot of sense to me. 1 1

I agree with you - don't skimp, replace the lot. However if you insisted on cutting & splicing/joining; Cut so as to have about 20 mm extra length Slid a suitable piece of shrink tube onto one end (Both cut ends) Peel back the insulation & remove Peel back the wire shielding & retain Strip the insulation of the inner wire Twist the inner wires together, to make a neat mechanical join (solder if available) OR join with small tubular crimp joiner Tape to insulate Restore wire shielding as best as you can - wrap with aluminium foil, to make good shielding Slip heat shrink over join and shrink in place Job done!😈
spacesailor Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Wouldn't it be simpler to put a male end onto one piece, then a female end onto the other. . The joining parts are readily available from ' Jaycar ' or your nearest amateur radio group . spacesailor 1 1 1

It's not very old so corrosion is not a problem. I leaned on the antenna by mistake when I was fitting aileron cables and it snapped off.
