red750 Posted March 22 Posted March 22 A man is recovering in hospital after a light plane overturned after landing in grassland on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula. Police were called just before 12pm following reports a vintage plane had flipped onto its roof after landing at Tyabb Airport. The pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft managed to climb out of the plane without help. 1
onetrack Posted March 22 Posted March 22 A rare Ryan STM-2, powered by a Menasco engine. It flipped in 1967, too, when the collets holding the inlet valves stripped, resulting in an EFATO. https://www.aerialvisuals.ca/AirframeDossier.php?Serial=18747 1 2
Litespeed Posted March 22 Posted March 22 VH-AWG...shit. Bugger I hope pilot is Ok. Beautiful aircraft, too special to not repair. They actually build replica ones for LSA in the states. 1
facthunter Posted Sunday at 12:44 AM Posted Sunday at 12:44 AM Nice looking plane . I nearly Bought VH AHD when I was at Marshalls at Bankstown, Ex Stan Hone CFI at RNAC. Getting upside down with those is risky There's usually a Pylon in front of the forward cockpit to hold the Plane off the ground. I can't see it there. A friend of Mine currently has one at Bendigo. Most went back to the STATES years ago. Aerobatic with a Supercharged Menasco Pirate engine with open valve gear, 150 HP. Delicate U/C structure easily deformed. Under all that "tin". Nev 1 3
Marty_d Posted Sunday at 02:42 AM Posted Sunday at 02:42 AM Beautiful aircraft. I love the look of the Ryans, especially polished aly. 2 1

Nev I used to goen stroll through Marshals hangar when I got to visit Bankstown (father and uncle used to work for Air Ag at Hangar 17, I worked for Tom at a much later date) as a kid, Spitfire x2, 109, KI 43 and all sorts of machinery. There was a ground trainer with small wings on it I thought would have been great. In those days a kid could walk through a hangar and nobody would bat an eye. 6

Methusala Posted Tuesday at 09:23 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:23 PM I used to walk from Cooma Nth to Polo Flat after school to watch Snowy Beavers return. Could walk around the apron looking into the cabins, no one cared. 2
