Recreational Flying combining with Social Australia

Hi All, again I am seriously considering combining the Recreational Flying site with the Off topic Social Australia site. If I do then it would look something like this:

 

Off Topic forums in the Forum List:

 

Separate Whats New (Unread), 1 for Recreational Flying and 1 for Social Australia:

Recreational Flying:

 

Social Australia

 

So, what are your thoughts? Thanks

Why?

It seems like it would just pollute the forum with non-aviation topics, and drive away aviation users. There's already too many non-aviation arguments here already.

Maybe if it dosen't involve too much work for you, i'd say give it a try if you think that's a prudent opportunity.

If it was then found to have detrimentally changed the total character of these forums that we have largely accepted for so many years, then consider changing back to original format.

Not everyone appreciates the fact that it has to be a financially viable proposition to even keep the site viable for us all to continue to enjoy, but they are hardly the ones paying fot it.

Disagree.

The overwhelming focus is aviation.

For the most part the few digressions are informative & entertaining.

In fact it may be better to have a section especially for when a digression strays too far from aviation - that part of the thread could be transferred to reduce the "pollution"  😈

Don’t know about others, but I read the forum using the “What’s New (unread)” facility, so given that Ian is proposing to have separate ’unread’ facilities for aviation and the other (which, incidentally, doesn’t interest me at all), then I don’t see any problem with the two sites becoming interwoven.

I know nobody gives a damn what I think, but personally, I would prefer them as separate sites. I joined Rec Flying when Off Topic was just another foum on the site. Then, when it was separated off as Social Australia, that became my prime site. Yes I still check the New (Unread) section of RecFlying, but only open a few of the topics, eg, 'Oddball,...' which I am closely involved in, creating aircraft profiles and posting any news (accidents, etc) that I pick up on. There are not many who are part of both sites, and I consider the regulars on SocAust to be my friends, kinda like a Men's Shed online. The fact that we can discuss/argue about anything from politics to cars and motorcycles without distracting from the central theme of RecFly is a big PLUS. Yes, I could survive if it returned to one site, but I don't know if the camaraderie of SocAust would continue the same.

I follow both sites but my preference would be to keep them separate. It’s ‘cleaner’ that way, but I don’t run the sites so whatever works best for you is OK with me.

I have always hoped that the aviation site would attract a lot more international members. I think it has in recent months, but still not to the level that it might. I think some people here put them off at times by saying this is an Australian aviation site.

I have no problem with the sites being combined. They almost are anyway. You can just choose the subjects you wish to be involved with and ignore those that you have no interest in. Simples.
