The aircraft was one of the new amphibian Freedom models from the Colyaer company , as such I guess that this aircraft was new to Australia . Reports are that the aircraft was inbound to Cessnock Airport in the Hunter Valley but had problems with retracting the undercarriage . The pilot decided that a water landing at Rathmines was the best outcome , however , on landing the aircraft flipped on the water due to the partly retracted undercarriage . Both occupants escaped and swam to shore . The owner of the aircraft is reported to have been the passenger . The aircraft was registered with the RAAus .

What it might have looked like...

Unfortunately, he must not have seen this video...

You'd think that when you get your canoe endorsement you instructor would hammer this outcome into you!

The biggest rule in floats is do not land on water with the gear extended even if its only partial. You won't do much damage if you land with your gear up on land but you'll write off an aircraft if you land on the water with them out. But iguess they found out the hard way. Good to hear no one was injured.

Most float aircraft can happily land on land with the wheels up and that's by design. Even Full Lotus Floats and floating hull models like the Freedom should easily be able to do this. Not sure if I'd rather crash onto water or land in that situation, both have good and bad points, but I'm thinking I would have taken my chances on hard land for this one especially with the slow stall speed of this particular aircraft.

Its easy to armchair fly any perfect emergancy.. Instructors can tell pilots the dangers untill they are blue in the face, but in the end, the buck stops with you..

Glad evryones ok, seeing as both walked (swam) away, one could argue that it was successfully negotiated..

cheers
