Hey,

 

Just wondering what kit/plans aicraft are out there. So far Ive been interested in the Midget Mustang.

 

It needs to have the following:

 

All metal construction (aluminium),

 

Cheap - $10k - $15k for kit,

 

Proven design,

 

1 or 2 seater, but preferable 1 due to cost,

 

Good performance,

 

Any suggestions would be great.

Have a look at the CH601XL. 2 seat aluminum kit very well put together kit. look at the "Zenith thread" on this forum for some more details. As the dollar is now around 97 cents against the US dollar it would be about 20k to get one into OZ.

The Thatcher CX-4 looks pretty nice, but there is no information on the website about how long its been around, how many sold, ect.

 

Now going to scratch building, any planes out there that you guys can think of?

Keep in mind that a Midget Mustang won't be able to be RA registered as its' stall speed is too high, just in case you were going that way.

for a two seater you could go a zenith, but i'm certain it'll come out over your $10k figure. The engine will come out over that

Look at the Sonex US$13.500 kit + shipping 80hp claimed 110knots 2 seats +4.4G. They also make a VW based 80Hp engine kit for US$6000-7000 dont know about power and reliability though. It is designed to be fitted with 2.2 & 3.3 Jabby donks as well.

After looking at many kits, prices ect. Ive decided that Ill either stick with the Midget Mustang or go for a RV3.

RA Aus magazine has a Zenith 701, advertised. All metal, STOL and around $15,000.... that's complete, so no build costs to add on. There is some front end damage, (Approx $5,000 worth, I believe) but it might be worth a look.

Teenie2, i did say $10k - $15k for a 'KIT'.

 

Standard kit for the Midget Mustang is $9,164USD. With engine mount, cowling, spats $12,454USD.

 

Standard kit for a RV3 is $13,425USD.

 

Still have to add your engine, instruments, paint ect. as with any other kit.
