Guest Maj Millard Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Hey Guys, Up here in Sunny QLD we get to kick into the 406 beacons in Nov, a couple of months before the rest of you ??.... (Have we been selected as guinea pigs yet again ?? ) So decided I will replace my old beacon soon. Narrowed it down to three that all seem to be in the 650-700 bucks range. Have wanted the 7yr battery life vs the 5yr. Will go with the GPS version as I'm often over mongrel remote country. So help me out please, will it be the GME 410g, the Kannard palm-size job, or the ACR RESQFIX with GPS. I'm sure they are all great units. Any imput would be appreciated. Cheers
youngmic Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 I'm wondering too, I'm also wondering why they cost so much, after all you can by a portable Icom for the same money or less and a lot more goes into one of those. M
dlps73 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 GME410G - Got mine from Bias Boating which was over $100 cheaper than the Aviation Supply stores. Cheers........Doug
Guest pedrok Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Agree look at boating shops they are a fair bit cheaper. Try Whitworths the non GPS is around $420, the GPS one about $580 and RESQFIX with GPS $569 when I looked the other day. Which is better, really they both meet the same standards, so it is pretty much a personal preferance about size and weight. For minor differences try this page Whitworths Marine: Safety > EPIRB's > > Not sure about the guinea pigs though - the new system has been up and running within Australia (and Internationally) for quite a few years. The main thing is that in Feb 09 the satellites will no longer monitor 121.5 (the old beacons) Should add the standard disclaimer: I have nothing to do wih Whitworths - just trying to save you some cash :)
Yenn Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 MT410/G looks good and National Parks in Qld have gone for them. I saw tham advertised by Aircraft Radio at Archerfield for from $429 inc GST, but when I enquired further they wanted $579 plus $19.8 for freight. I have told them it was false advertising and I am telling you the same. There is no honesty in advertising.
Guest Michael Coates Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 That the price for the version without GPS
Guest Maj Millard Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Thanks everybody for your imput on the EPIRBS, I have also found that they seem to be a bit cheaper at your local boat shop. Thanks all Ross.
