Not Aviation related but does anyone know about landsailing

Hi all,

 

the xmas holidays are coming up and I have set myself a new project-making a landsailer. I have used a friends one numerous times but his is a factory built blokart. I would love one but just cand seem to come to terms with the $3000 pricetag for what I see as a wheelbarrow with a windsurfer sail. lol

 

Has anyone on here either owned one or still own one and any hints?

we made a few years ago out of pranged hang gliders cut the sail in half down the keel and used off cut tubing for the frame. the only thing that took time to make was the front wheel assembly. raced them up and down the still being built foreshore road at Botany whatch out for powerelines with them. great fun on windy days.

 

suppose you could use an old hobie sail and rigging bits.

My father built one a few years back - it's a hell of a lot of fun. Next time I get a chance I'll take some photos, and ask him if he has any plans.

Looks like fun...:big_grin::thumb_up: I reckon you could knock a sail up pretty easily...all you need is some sail cloth(or something), your wifes sewing machine, and some now how on driving material through a sewing machine.... (it's not that hard...)

 

Anyway...Sorry I'm not much of a help...

 

Ps. just a note of caution...DON'T use your foot as a brake....I did that on my go-cart (it's designed in the same way, but with an engine instead), and nearly broke my ankle:crying:thumb_down... my foot hit a lump of dirt, and bang it got bent back write the wrong way....did that 3-4months ago and I still have some pain every now and then through my ankle:ah_oh:

Had a "blokart" years ago and found it a lot of fun..so much so that thinking of either getting another or building one similar.

My son and I built 2 out of bike parts and old wind surfer masts and sails.They look quite professional and go, but we have no where to use them.We live south of Brisbane.

Any photos you have would be great. I have also heard the hardest part is getting the steering head and fork rake correct. So if you have any ideas I would love to know.

Give me a couple of days to sort out some photos and construction details. As I'm fairly new to this computer buisiness,I'll have to get my son to help. I can say that the two we built cost next to nothing, the back wheels are wheel barrow type ( new), the front wheels , forks and peddle steering etc are made out of a couple of $10 kids bikes from Vinnies, mast posts are exhaust tube,frames are box steel, seats are $2 plastic chairs from the Sallys and the masts and sails were picked up cheap from life line. I must say that I do have my own welder plus oxy /accetylene which certainly helped. My son got the plans off the net but they're not there any more.I'll draw up something with measurements and take lots of photos and get back.:thumb_up:

Hope these give you an idea.The overall length is 2.4 m, width is 1.5m. Let me know when you've got it up and running and if you find a good place to sail it.
