Guest Pop-top Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Hi Guys, Especially to those who fly the new Sportstar SL's at Aldinga; I'm trying to get the hang of how to use the new nav systems in them. Dont get me wrong I would never depend on one and would prefer to know my way by good old fashioned site seeing and nav'ing. But as I'm starting solo nav's for the first time and Im not familiar with my area yet, it would be handy to have something to use and double check that all my estimates are correct in terms of "what is that town, river," etc. are ther any websites that show you how to use it? or a pdf instruction manual etc? Thanks, Jodie
Thx1137 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 G'day Thumper, I always wanted to find the manuals myself but didn't have much luck. I had another go tonight and got a bit further :-) I found some manuals for the EFIS, I am pretty sure we have the D100 model. Have a look at: Dynon Avionics - Support Documentation. I think the GPS we have is the Garmin 396. Manuals for that can be found here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-00425-00&cID=156&pID=313 Steven.
Guest pelorus32 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 If you do have the Dynon D100 and you have any questions I can probably help. Also in the reviews section of this site there is a review of the Garmin 296 which gives you some idea of how the system works - most of the x96 Garmins work in the same way to each other. Regards Mike
Guest Pop-top Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Thank you both, my first nav solo is tomorrow morning so wish me luck :)
Guest Maj Millard Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 God speed John Glenn.....ah Thumper. First time solo navs are fun...just don't get lost !.
slartibartfast Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Good luck Jodie. If you plan to the last detail and are on top of your cockpit management, you won't need luck. Enjoy spreading your wings.
Guest Pop-top Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 It was a hot day with quite a bit of wind on the Adling side of the hills, so my instructor made the call, solo nav would have to wait 'til next lesson pending weather. So we flew to YGWA and got a few short field/right hand circuits experience on 09, which was good :)
Thx1137 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Ohhh, landing at a different airfield somehow seems a bit exciting. I get to do that soon myself :-) What was your flight plan going to be for the nav? I am wondering if it is just around our training area or if we go further afield. I would have thought we would go somewhere different to introduce some unfamiliarity.
Guest Pop-top Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Hello, Nice to talk to another Aldinga student! :) I've done some touch and goes at Murray Bridge, Strath and Goolwa, so far. my original first solo nav flight plan was for YADG-YGWA-YSYN-YADG and that same loop in reverse was also planned then they tell you which way your going on the day. who do you usually fly with?
Thx1137 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I thought that might be the loop. :-) I did that on my first nav, I had to divert from Goolwa because they were doing parachuting so that was novel. I is a good loop as I usually have lots of bumps, lift and sink so it helps me get used to a reasonable workload. I can hardly imagine flying in smooth air?! My first lesson was with Leo but the next 12 hours or so were mostly with Steve. These days I mostly swap between Ryan and Wayne with the occasional Steven and Leo :-) Steven.
Guest Pop-top Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Hehehe, meatbombs. I know what you mean about novel, but every now and then something strange happens. eg: yesterday someone claimed they were 5572....which was the sporty I was in! what do you broadcast when that happens?? Wayne made a quick broadcast to clear it up but I was too concerned with my thermal affected crosswind final to listen 100%. Do you, or anyone else know what that broadcast would sound like approx? Same, I started with Steve, had 1-2 with Leo and now mostly Wayne or Ryan. I went Solo with Ryan, scary for him!
Thx1137 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I would have said something like: "SportStar 5572 please confirm your callsign as I am also SportStar 5572!" :-) I always say to them I like to scare them all equally so I don't mind swapping now that it is a bit later in the game :-) The landing sounds like fun :-) I remember one of my landings on my second solo. Approaching 32 and looking like I was going to clear the trees nicely then I hit some sink and my left wing dropped. Full aileron and some power and got it back on track when I then go lift and was way high. Can't win sometimes. It mainly seems to be 32 that that happens to me on though.
Guest Pop-top Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 LOL, I've only used 32 once so far...but I didn't have that problem.....I almost hit a flock of birds as I was landing! so had to go around.
Thx1137 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Once! I am almost forgetting what the other runways look like! :-) On my first trip to Milang I was at 3,500 when I saw this object heading towards us on my right hand side. I am looking at it thinking, it can't be a plane but there was no flapping of wings. It ended up being a pair of Eagles. I was ready to take evasive maneuvers because I had read that they may attach aircraft. It was a great sight though.
Guest Pop-top Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 hahahaha, we must fly on very different days! I usually get 21, 03, 26 or 14. I'd never heard that about Eagles! good to know :) Only saw one on down wind 21. it was just hanging there suspended. Very cool. still wish I could have someone sitting next to me with a camera...oh well that day will come.
Mikey_A Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I'm still trying to get used to the Sportstar as I only had my first two lessons in one the Monday before last. Were you flying that day Jodie? I heard a female voice on the radio. My next lesson is next Monday, forecast 35C again!!!
Guest Pop-top Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Hey Mikey, Have you flown other planes or were they your first two lessons? I flew on the 26th because of the public holiday but unfortunately I have to work in the city Monday to friday so my lessons are limited to every other weekend. I usually fly on as unday or sat morning at 8 or 9am. Do you like the sporty? :) I love it when you do steep turns and you can see absolutely everything! great views on a clear day. plus they now have that nifty little visor so you don't get too fried! Just dont make the mistake I did and put on the cabin heat instead of Carby on a 35 degree day....it gets HOT...believe me! (did that in the 4399 when they were right next to each other)
Ryanm Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 G'Day Jodie, Steve. You want to cheat during your solo nav????:ah_oh: Good idea to get to know the system, can come in handy, but as you know dont reply on it! Nothing beats map reading as the GPS could fail one day and you wont remember how to map read! It believe the sporties have the Garmin 495. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP495_OwnersManual.pdf
Yenn Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 "I hit some sink and my left wing dropped. Full aileron and some power" Was that really the best way to pick up a wing on approach?
