slartibartfast Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Did a few circuits yesterday to warm up the oil. Changed oil and filter. Had an itch that could only be scratched with a cruise. Filled up and departed Goulburn for Tumut. Pete wasn't there, so decided Holbrook would be nice. On the way read the AOPA and saw prior permission required. Overflew and looked quiet anyway. Decided to head to Adaminaby or Jindabyne. Decided on the way to make it Adaminaby because I could walk into town for an icecream if nobody was there. Ion and Gitta gave me a lift and we sat and chatted while licking. Left Adaminaby for the lovely flight through Canberra back to Goulburn. This involves tracking just inside the 11 mile DME and under the 3500' step. It gives a great view. Cut over the property I used to live on. It was over 1000 acres, now it's subdivided and almost unrecognizable with new roads and buildings everywhere. Tracked to Geary's Gap and flew along Lake George at 500' beside the highway. Got home to a smooth landing on 08 (04 is being resealed - badly) and tucked the Cheetah to bed. Total 4.5 hours engine time, at least 320 nautical miles (not including sight-seeing detours and thermalling for a while - got some great lift) and all on one tank with 23 litres left (fuel flow meter and dipstick agreed). Itch diminished, but still there. Blissed out. The day got hot, but it was smooth above the inversion, and some great thermalling under it. Great day for a backyard cruise. Cheers, Ross
