Remember people there are no stupid questions only stupid answers.

Section 13.5.2 of the AIPSuP re flying into Avalon says to repeat the towers instructions.

Eg. "YMAV TWR .. ............ .......... .........."

Do you say "Avalon Tower" or what? Quotation marks usually mean say as written but why mav tower doesn't seem quite right somehow.

Also there will be more than one tower so Avalon doesn't seem enough.

Would it be Avalon Main Tower perhaps?

What would you say?

Yep, pretty self explanatory, something like:

Avalon Tower

or

Avalon East / Avalon East Tower

Coming into Avalon East the dialogue might be something like: (don't rely on it being the same of course!)

- Avalon East g'day, Tecnam 1234 approaching little river mouth, 1,500ft, received information Romeo

- Tecnam 1234 g'day Avalon Tower, call when joining wide base for runway 17 (follow Cessna 172 ahead)

- Wide base for 17, Tecnam 1234 (traffic sighted)

When you're at base:

- Avalon East, Tecnam 1234 joining wide base for 17 full stop

- Tecnam 1234, number 2 for 17 Right (behind the Cessna passing the threshold)

- Number 2 for 17 Right, Tecnam 1234.

When you are on final (or possibly on base)

Tower: Tecnam 1234, cleared to land 17 right

You: Cleared to land, 17 right, Tecnam 1234

This is representative of what might happen. If you are unsure if you can handle it, try running through it verbally with a flying friend or PPL and they can throw some curly instructions at you to see how you handle them. Much of the above may or may not be said, it all depends on how busy the tower is and how you respond.

If in your first call you say 'Avalon East Tower, Tecnam 1234, Little River Mouth, received Romeo, unfamiliar with area' - Expect to receive more detailed instructions.

Of course it really wouldn't matter what you called them as they would be on their own frequency anyway so there would never be any confusion, unless you called East, but were after main.

It's not overly difficult, you just need to make sure that you READ BACK the important parts of the clearance.
