Guest drizzt1978 Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I am thinking about purchasing a sp 6. (In the next few months) I Love the idea of the bigger engine. Im a bit confused about fuel capacity, as I have seen different specifications. Also I have never been in one, Im currently doing my solo hours in a 170, so if anybody could give me a comparison I would be interested. Also any reasons why I should not get one!!! So basically I am after as much info as possible. My budget would be 50-60K...
Guest brentc Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Hey M, of course there are 2 of them at Tooradin if you're after a ride! One of the owners is there almost every day and would be happy to take you I'm sure. At least one of the SP's at Tooradin has wet wings, so 135 litres in that one, but not sure about the other one as it's an older model with different cowls, so it might have an internal tank, plus it was extra for the wet wings at purchase. Cabin size is the same as the LSA55 if you ever got to fly one of those before they were sold. As for whether or not you should buy one, my only concern is that the fuse it based (cabin-wise) on the LSA55 and is therefore nowhere as big as the J160/170. The fuse is 2.5ft longer than the LSA55 and the tail is much larger, more like the 160. In actual fact the SP in the hangar at Tooradin is the very last of the SP's in the old shape and had most of the mods before they then brought out the 160. Probably the J120 is identical to the SP-4 as far as I can tell, except that it's possibly got an inch or two extra height in the door frame (we measured it one day).
Guest Cloudsuck Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 G'day Drizz, I have a SP500T which is a 3.3 6cyl. It has the 80L tank behind the seat. It is basically a J120 with a longer fuse, bigger rudder, toe brakes and a big engine. If you are used to the asthmatic J160 or marginally better J170, these will blow your socks off. Bang for buck, dollar for dollar the most performance in the rec aviation class. Oh.. mine is for sale well in your price range if you are that way inclined ;)
