Guest ozzie Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Just recieved this from the moni group. bit pushed for time and wont get to look at it till tonite so i'll just cut and past it Morry Hummel has designed a new Part 103 legal ultralight. This one has a 30.5 foot wingspan (100 square feet area), flaps, optional tri-gear, and is sized to fit a tall 200+ pound pilot. Of course it uses the 1/2 VW engine. The photos of the fuselage look like a slightly longer Hummel Bird fuse. The plane is stressed for 6.6 g's ultimate, 4.4 g's yield. Plans/kit details are still being worked out. The prototype looks and flies great, according to the experienced test pilot. There is an article with photos available. The article says the Eagle thermals well. No L/D figures given. You have two options to view the article: 1) The Ultracruiser Yahoo Group have placed the file (in 3 parts, or 3 different files) in its Files section for their group. or 2) You will need to join the Yahoo Group MinimalistAirplaneStudyGroup. You can then access their Files section for the siingle file which should be available at the URL: Hummel%20Eagle.JPG You can also try flyhummel.com Ozzie
gofastclint Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 sounds great, love the look of a fully polished hummel.
Guest Maj Millard Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Had the pleasure of talking with Morry a few times in the past. He had just lost his wife, and didn't mind a chat on the phone at that time, always very helpfull. What I did find out is that he is a top class, and very experienced sheet metal worker, bordering on perfectionist. This is why some people really get fustrated building his aircraft, because it can't be built any better. Ever sat in a Hummelbird ?..it feels like you are in a little P51 Mustang. I supported him when I could, as he is an original, and a good contributor to aviation.....................

Guest Maj Millard Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Can't say if he did much flying or not, most of my discussion was to do with matters technical. Perhaps one of those guys who just likes designing and building. He's got to be getting on now too................................
Guest Maj Millard Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I do like the look of Morry Hummels new plane, with that thick airfoil it mustn't want to land, but I bet it cruises real high and climbs like a banshee. Same solidly built construction, bet it would go real well with an 80 hp 912 in it...................
