BigPete Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Here's a question..... If/When the new weight limit (for RAA) of 760kgs comes in...... Can a J230 under the LSA catergory, be changed to the RAA and loaded to 700kg as per a J430 or J230 in the Experimental catergory? regards :big_grin:
Guest Brett Campany Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I'm pretty sure it can only be loaded to what ever its MTOW is stated. edit - The J230's MTOW is 600kg so that's as heavy as she can be. The new weight will allow manufacturers to build new aircraft with a greater MTOW. It also allows other aircraft like a C152 into the RAAus category.
Guest brentc Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 No sorry Pete, because the stall speed will be too high. If the stall speed was raised we'd be all happy. The J200 stalls at 45 knots at 544kg's. The J230 stalls at 45 knots at 600kg's. The J430 stalls at around 47 knots at 700kg's (from memory - guess) The J400 stalls at around 49 knots at 700kg's (from memory - guess) The J430 / J230 airframe has a new MTOW of 760kg's in experimental (coincidence as this was on the wish-list for South Africa) but unfortunately this won't help as the stall speed will remain at 45 knots. The real bummer for me is that mine is a J400 and it can only be sold as a J400 or J200 so if I sell it as a J200 it can only ever be 544 kilos because of the stall speed.
BigPete Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 OK - If that's the case...... A J170 (in LSA) stalls at 40 knots (full flap) Change to RAA (from LSA, 600kgs) and stall at maybe 45 knots at around 650kg?? regards :big_grin:
Guest brentc Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 42-43 maybe, however the MTOW of the 170 is your issue here as it's currently 600kg's. They may not increase MTOW any higher as it would be little use unless you're a major fattie.
tvaner Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Gents, I think this question is answered in the latest Mag. at the top of page 33 in the article by Steve Bell on aircraft registrations, "If you are considering LSA, remember that they cannot be any heavier than 600kgs MTOW, which means that when RA-Aus is given the weight increase asked for, these aircraft will remain restricted to 600kgs."
